Demon Spell Casting Causes Crash

I have the fixpack version 9.01 installed and when trying to farm demon hearts for the planar sphere quest I find that my game will freeze every time they cast a certain spell. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is a pretty serious inconvienience in my game playing. Thanks in advance.

I'm unable to reproduce the issue locally with a similar install. Judging from the description, the problem that you are experiencing might be related to the graphics settings.

 

Try using BGConfig.exe to set the game resolution to 800x600, turn off 3D Acceleration and play in Windowed mode. Then check if that makes any difference. Also, here are some instructions for submitting a more detailed log file of the crash itself, most notably:

 

In case the BG2 game crashes, open up the 'baldur.ini' in your game folder, and under the [Program Options] section in the file, make a new line and type in 'Logging On=1' (without the '' quotes, unless the line is already there)... Save the file and exit. Now go back into the game and try to reproduce the crash. Then look in your game folder again for the Baldur.err file and open it with the Notepad to analyze its contents, or let us do it.

I experienced this one a recent install during the Planar Prison quest - it's the tanarii death gaze spell that causes it. I actually uninstalled the fixpack and started again and it was fine.

I don't think it's Death Gaze (SPIN996.SPL) as the fixpack doesn't alter that spell at all. Just to eliminate a possible cause, did you apply the latest official patch (26498) before installing the fixpack? Also, are you by any chance using a Mac version of BG2?

 

As noted earlier, I'm unable to reproduce this issue on Windows with a clean installation of BG2:ToB + Patch 26498 + fixpack + UB.

It was a clean install with ToB and patch, on Windows XP. I was also running some elements of UB and ATweaks, but I don't have the WeiDU log any more as I've subsequently played through the game with other mods. Note that I did not have the Beta fixes installed from the Fixpack.

Hmm, it seems like the Tanar'ri's innate Vampiric Touch might be the culprit. They cast that alongside Death Gaze in the unmodded game. We'll look into it.

 

If that is indeed the problematic spell, deleting SPIN997.SPL from the override folder might serve as a temporary workaround.

For some reason Vampiric Touch is a 8th level innate. Whether it is the source of the problem or not, I'd include setting all innates to 1st level in Core Fixes.
