Thanks for EET!

Recommended Posts

Just finished my first playthrough with EET and various other mods. For the most part it was relatively bug free. I did feel a bit OP in BG2 although not in TOB (Ascension I think was really kicking my butt hard?).

Couple of bugs I did note:

* Breakable weapons mod continues through SOD, BG2 and TOB. This almost caused me to have to quit Watcher's Keep as the fallen warrior's spirit's sword kept breaking while he was under my control - he couldn't kill anything only knock things unconscious so I had to reload until by chance I managed to make it the full way through without his sword breaking. I don't think I install in next time unless there's a way to limit it to BG1 only.

* Some weird things with Imoen's thief levels in BG2? She ended up wayyy overleveled compared to my main character so I ended up doing a fresh import into BG2 which fixed her though.

Anyway just wanted to say thank you and hope the list of compatible mods continues to grow.

@Zanalina

It is good to see reports of people who really played through EET all the way.

For the sake of BWS it would be quite interesting to see your Weidu.log and WeiDU-BGEE.log. There is not yet some *recommended* mod selection for EET and very little material to establish one yet. Your experience could be used, especially with regards to some settings for SCS or EET_Tweaks to see how a balanced game in EET could be optimised.

(There is my own experience with EET I have tried to share but it is VERY subjective, so it will be good to hear more voices on it.)

So I think these are the right logs?

So I think these are the right logs?

Logs are fine - just, next time you post such amount, please use spoiler tags for it, makes it easier for people and the forum software to handle it.

Very big mods may often just have a single line, the entries are by component, like BG1UB is many small components while equally big AC-mod is a single line.

I also add this problem in my last run but, until now, I thought I made an error when choosing mods/components (I didn't use BWS for my install)...

J've just checked once more and the only component related seems to be :

~STRATAGEMS/SETUP-STRATAGEMS.TP2~ #0 #3021 // Replace many +1 magical weapons with Fine ones -> Fine weapons are immune to the iron crisis: v30 BWP fix + K4thos' EET compatibility

But you have not this component...

Hmm I wonder if it is just the base game behaviour crossing over from BG1 all the way to TOB? Not sure of any other way to explain it but I definitely had normal weapons breaking on me in BG2/TOB (hilariously it would happen to guys I was fighting in BG2 semi frequently so they would end up trying to punch me to death).

I am pretty sure that, at least once, I used a mod/component that allowed to choose the scope of this behavior (BG1EE part only or Whole EET), (weapons and/or armors and/or helms) and probability of this to happen for each type of items (i.e. : 5% for helms, 10% for armors...).

Probably an old version of EET_Tweaks...

@Zanalina

Hey Roxanne, you can check mine as well as I'm pretty far into EET. Probably 200+ hours now, and completed several quests in BG2. Taking a slight break but hope to return to it soon (just a bit bored by gaming in general right now.)

A few balance-related things I noticed:

1. Vampires in Firkraag's dungeon are so very, very tough, especially compared to the rest of the dungeon. I had to turn back twice from them. The Rakshasa outside is no joke, either, but that's okay since A) it's a Rakshasa, and B) it is a good indicator to NOT go into the dungeon until you're stronger.

2. Mages are of course very tough at times, but doable. At least now that I have further advanced knowledge of the game in general. But still some very tough spots where you either have to run or semi-cheese through, like wait for their protections to run out. At least, this is in my experience, and I'm not a super knowledgeable BG player yet.

3. The Druid Grove Rakshasa's - also impossible for my party. Just avoiding it for a good while now.

4. XP related. 50% seems to be a decent spot, but on SCS with all Tactical options turned on + Hard difficulty, 50% is too low. I had to then boost to 200% for a quest or two so I would "catch up" and be where I was supposed to be. Because I was lacking the XP to have the spells necessary to compete against the tougher magical enemies. Maybe 75% or even the full 100% on those settings would be ideal?

That's all that come to mind right now. I have super enjoyed the EET all the way to a few dozen hours into BG2. The game is really fun. Question - Is further content ever being considered for EET? Maybe revisiting Thalantyr in BG2 or something, so he can forge new items for you? Just a thought. Oh, and keep in mind I didn't do Ulgoth's Beard yet, so I missed that XP the first time through (I know I can return later, but there isn't a good roleplaying reason just yet to do that.)

Everything else is awesome. Only getting a few items left after the thieves pick through your BG/SoD gear was awesome. Other than that I've had just several minor bugs, like dialog triggering when getting a new companion and them talking about quests they weren't involved with. Sometimes getting a "flood" of dialogue from certain characters about old quests, etc.. But that's it.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me. I might fire up the game tonight and play a bit more.

@ fluent

This is good feedback.

Most of the things you noticed on enemies is from SCS. Since that are all independent components, they can be selected by BWS for different setups (e.g. Firkraag harder dungeon for tactical only.)

More EET content? EET does not add any content, it is meant as a platform for modders to add news stuff for the new possibilities.

E.g. my Sandrah mod involves Thalantyr in later quests and also puts new content into a number of BG1 and SoD areas. In my mod you revisit older parts during later campaigns. So far it is the only mod I know of that already uses these features. (Most mods design for the separated game and then just glue together for EET still.)

Your Sandrah mod is exactly what I'm talking about. I meant to ask if the EET team had any plans to expand into actual content. Others could do like your Sandrah mod, offering EET content that ties together things in BG1-SoD-BG2, offering official new story bits and "EET exclusive" type of content. Sort of like Beamdog does but this content would be for the EET. That would be cool, IMO.

I also wish the whole thing would be easier to get into. I like how BWS makes it easier to install things, but as a first time player I messed up by adding all these extra SCS options, even though I knew they'd be challenging, I didn't realize they'd be impossible with the "wrong" settings (like turning XP gain down lower.) Improvements in the install process would be great, IMO, and just lowering the bar for entry a bit more for other players to get a more balanced experience. And more balancing in general would be cool for SCS (although that's a separate topic, I know.) I didn't realize the Harder Firkraag dungeon for example, would have a super hard, nearly (and maybe) impossible encounter with vampires. I took "Tactical" to mean really challenging but not impossible.

It'd be cool for you guys (modders) to combine forces. All the various companion quests could be worked on simultaneously and really polished and taken to new heights. "Official EET content." You guys could all give Beamdog a run for their money.

We need more Sandrah type mods. I still have to play that one, but it sounds like exactly the next evolution for EET (even though it's not EET content so to speak, but you know what I mean.)

Those are quite a number of topics in one post. Let us keep things apart.

1. EET by itself is a mod that merges all the campaigns into ome game that can be played as one now. It does not add content on its own, although it restores some scones into context like how you segue from SoD to SoA. It adds a number of advantages to the game like continuous gameplay with continuous NPCs, a common worldmap you can travel all over, a single chapter sequence, one set of rules etc.

2. SCS is a separate mod with a large number of components and designed to enhance enemy behavior for all game installations (+ some game tweaks that it adds). Reports like yours are helpful to find which *doses* of SCS may be best suited for EET and *EET-tactical* >> BWS can offer this pre-selection once we have it.

3. *EET content + EET Team* - there is no such thing, or if there is, I am not aware of it. K4thos created EET inspired by the BGT for the classic game. He had people contributing, testing and helping with tools. EET is in a stable version since half a year now and its creator has not been seen since then. Modders are just exploring possibilities of the new possibilities that are offered.

4. There are some individual activities to add specific EET content to the game

  • Breagar has been recently updated to EET compatibility, he was a BGT creature (like Sandrah) who spanned the whole original game and now has some new SoD content added by jastey.
  • I have started Corwin to become available already prior to SoD and I can imagine that in EET she may become available again if you visit Baldur's Gate town again.
  • I have released the part 1 of a Caelar related mod that lets you side with her against her advisor during SoD and I have a plan that you later can revisit Dragonspear to free her and have her as a ToB companion, this way having a party including all your former antagonists.
  • Non-content mods, e.g. Thalantyr item mod, shop mods, kits etc are already continuous in the way that you can always re-visit and use them from later parts of EET.
  • Most modders are still reluctant to provide *EET-exclusive* stuff, they are afraid to lose their audience that sticks with the segregated game (and complain about the missing continuity of it...)

Good stuff, thanks Roxanne. What I meant by EET Team is that I always thought modders should team up and work as a group on adding more great content to the game in that style. I understand why modders don't want to do that, but hopefully the EET becomes more popular so more players use it as the standard way to play the game. Then modders wouldn't have to worry about missing their audience. But yeah, I get that. Nobody seems to like BG1 much anymore compared to BG2 (I do, but whatever.)

Power in numbers and all that. More modders should combine forces and focus their efforts + combine talents. But that's just been a thought of mine for awhile now, for any RPG mod scene, really.

2. More SCS feedback. I like stronger vampires in theory, same with Rakshasas... I just think that that specific vampire encounter could be toned down with less overall vampires in one battle.

4. All that sounds awesome. More mods that tie you back into BG1/SoD areas in some way (reasons to head back to the Nashkel Carnival, or even the werewolf cabin in High Hedge. Tons of possibilities.) would start to make the EET it's "own thing", almost like a mod expansion in some ways. Not sure if I'm being clear. But yeah, you guys rock. Keep doing what you do, you're all really improving this series over time.

Link to comment

Hah, nice! You are already thinking ahead of the game.

Wish I could restart and try your mod, it sounds awesome, but I'm already deeper into BG2. And this is actually the furthest I've ever gotten in BG2, so I'd like to at least beat the game once. ON a future EET run, though, I'll use the Sandrah mod for sure. You'll have to let me know of some others I should try, too, since I was a bit unclear on which ones *should* be enabled with BWS (a few were yellow/orange, and at the time I wasn't sure if they would mess up the XP gains and stuff like that. Which is why I hope BWS functionality is improved even more for first-time players...)
