Having issues installing Widescreen BG1 (Takes 15 minutes to load game)

I installed the Original Sagas, then downloaded almost every mod from the GOG sticky pertaining to Baldurs Gate 1. Without the Widescreen installed and deleting the GUI files which I think I did mess up to begin with once regarding order, the game loads up fine. Very rapidly.

Yet when I set the resolution in Widescreen to 1280x800, (I was trying to do 1680x1080, realized that was in error) and promptly the GUI, loading up the game is a disaster.

When messing around, sometimes it would make the box in the top-left, but the 1280x800 works now, but after laying down, waiting 20 minutes since it blacks out both my monitor screens in angst.

I'm not sure what is making the mods and the Original Saga blop black across everything, but its like everything freezes, I can't do anything even Ctrl/Alt/Delete. I've restarted my computer atleast ten times.

Can anyone please help me? I run Windows 7 btw, and changed the properties for the shortcut to Windows 2000, and sometimes disabled "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings". I just put it back though at this point...

Well, don't use any Windows settings in the shortcut. The game should work fine in the current Window'es. You just need to configure the game... and to do that, you ought to install it into a folder you have a write permission in. In Windows 10, that is only in the C drives, in C:\Users\<username>\Folders\ ... Windows 7 has different restrictions, but you need to disable the User Account Control and the Program Compatibility Assistant, as those are mistakes that Microsoft made. Here's an a very old post of mine that about it.

Now, it might take 15 minutes to load the game, simply because you have it installed to a USB drive ... as there, the data transfer rate is horribly bad... but if that's not the case, then never mind.

The 1680x1080 resolution at least sets majority of the areas to a section where they need a resized background pictures, so they need to be expanded, which expands them and places the files to the override folder. Having them there slows the games start compared to the original games file structure as there the files are in a .bif "archive", the word is in quotes as the .bif file is the games own private format from which it can read the files faster. You can use the Generalized Biffing mod to do that exact same thing ... and have them still uninstallable. Yes, this form of storage will double the original override folder size, as it moves the files to a place they can be uninstalled from and then makes the .bif files. But that shouldn't matter on todays Terabyte HDDs... in favor of speed.

Okay I won't do so. I had in my "Storage HD", but now installed it within C:Drive proper. I have User Account disabled and Program Compatibility Assistant I have never seen of before, so don't think it is on. I will check out the link.

I could understand in my other drive, but now its in my C, and when I change the resolution in Widescreen Mode (Only mod installed in folder), to 1280x800, it just doesn't make any sense to me. Game runs absolutely fine otherwise. I won't have it at 1680x1050 since it destroys the game and my computer afterwards.

Does it have to do with the with that its v1.3.5521, shows up as "Tales of the Sword coast" on my menu bar, it has all the content in it though, Original Saga? Perplexed.

I have a small inching that it could be, but it probably isn't the thing I suspect... but try and install this (the ie-ddrawfix.zip extracted should give you a utility that install the fix) before the Widescreen mod, and see if it helps.

Tried it, most I felt if anything happened was it made the time shorter of it being a black screen by several minutes. I was about to get into the game but stupidly attempted to use Greenshot software to take a screenshot to show you, and it makes everything black again. Definitely can't go back to desktop once using Widescreen.

If it still doesn't work, I'll just use Windows-2000 Virtualbox to play the game I guess.

Fyi, I tried using your ddrawfix again, after installing Widescreen just to see, and using that and using the regular ddraw file, they both get errors reverting to some previous version.

if '4536320-byte file bgmain2.exe' then it isn't a version supported by the widescreen mod...

get the patch here
BGTalesDX8Intl.exe ( 1.3.5521)

It is strange that ie-ddrawfix fails to install... is the exe packed in some way (warez) ?

edit: after patching it will ask for wrong cd numbers use cd 3 when it asks for cd 6, etc.

The ddraw didn't work. Its due to some unforeseen issue caused by GOG-related versions. Others at the Baldurs Gate forum have reported the same I have, at least a dozen times.

It isn't warez, its the GOG variant. I tried your method but it just didn't work.

I fixed my issue though. I Tutu'ed my GOG's, and still had the issue, even without Bigg's Widescreen support in the Tutufix directory. Baldur's Gate 1 simply can't rune at 1280x960 from

the Baldurs Gate 2 Config, nor can the GOG versions handle Widescreen AT ALL. It shouldn't be touched at all. Simply refuses above 1024x768.

I appreciate the help Jarno Mikkola and aqrit, really do.
