I suppose that to get inner details about IE you have to dissasemble original binaries so one could assume that you maintain annotated asm code. Is it possible to obtain such thing? I'm trying to fix one particular bug in BG2 under Wine but so far I'm quite unsure about possible reasons for crash.

No developers of gemRB has such stuff. All pieces of the IE known around there is from reverse engineering. See the IESDP for more details. (If you don't believe me, there are still some parts unknown, even after all this time)

Yeah, a topic title is misleading, sorry ;-) I was talking about an (annotated) asm code. Too bad that Bioware is not ID Software anyway...

Theoretically, they might have lost the sources. Practically, i guess it was the easiest to say.

It could be that the original programmers of the IE are not even working at BioWare.

I don't know, but i cannot afford to ponder this anyway.

Almost all of the IE is rewritten by now, and a lot of stuff that's missing isn't in the original sources either.

The sources would still help significantly, but they are not essential.

I've read that a lot of older proprietary software projects really do lose the source code. It can get accidentally deleted, wiped in HD failure, physically lost. When there's no more plans to release new material based on the code there's less incentive to keep it. They probably weren't planning on open-sourcing it anyway.

Mostly offtopic here, but still: I wonder at times, if that's ever possible at all to get original 3d models they used to create areas, I imagine that should've boosted area-making immensely while keeping these new areas as close to vanilla style as possible. If Bioware "lost" these as well, perhaps some of Bioware modellers of olde still have them and could be persuaded to "accidentally leak" them at a price ;)

That's for sure. But my concern was not about quality as much as authenticity. Have you noticed how the same boxes, shelves, closets and so on, houses even are reused in various vanilla areas over and over again? I believe that contributes somewhat to general feeling of certain area being genuine to the game and thus might help custom area to blend in seamlessly.
