Xan's Romance Talks

onerous

Recommended Posts

I have BGT installed and for some odd reason, Xan's love talks are proceeding one right after another. I just rescued him from the mines and as soon as my party headed outside he bombarded me with 4 talks in a row. Then once his flirts trigger, they fire one after another without pause. I'm not sure if other romances are affected since I haven't gotten out of Nashkel yet.

I've attached my WeiDU log. I would like to know how to reset the timers so the romance proceeds normally. I chose the extended timer (1 hour 30 minutes between talks) during install. I'm not sure which mod is causing the problem. A quick fix so I don't have to redo my mod installation would be greatly appreciated.

I'll disable the romance for now and pick up Coran to see if his romance has the same affliction.

Oops. Apparently I don't have permission to attach a WeiDU.log file. I'll try to post the log using the spoiler. Sorry about this; it's a really long list.

I don't understand why it is causing problems now. I've never had this problem before when playing BGT years ago. Is there a way to fix this or should I just wait until the newest version of BG1NPCs comes out?

We have not had any bug reports about this with installs for years (as in 0 reports ever), but this is the second report like this in the past few months. I am sorry you ran into it. Either some mod out there is screwing with gtimes in a new way, or..

heck, I don't know. It doesn't matter in the long run, because the answer in the long term is to change the behavior so no one can mess with us.

If you want to tackle this manually, you are going to need to roll back Generalized Biffing.

Then, you will need to find and edit the scripts dealing with Xan's romance, and insert the values you want. And you will want to open the file "gtimes.ids" in your override directory, and make sure there is still a setting for XAROM_TIMER.

We can lead you through it step by step, so that you don't have to go through it alone (Kulyok is the Xan expert, so she can do this)... there should be very few edits needed. BUT there is no guarantee that other mods that use the classic "gtimes loophole" will not have troubles on your game.

...or you could take a risk, and try a custom beta test.

I can provide you with a test copy of the already released version (DON'T use the github version as it is currently under untested revision) which has the timers swapped to variables. You would have to roll everything back to ~SETUP-SIRINESCALL.TP2~ #0 #0 // The Lure of the Sirine's Call: v12, then install the private beta I would set up for you, then re-install everything onto your game. That would be awesome from my standpoint, because if the timers are still messed up after that, we have ruled out this problem and can go looking for whatever else is messing with our scripts, and if they work, then I can toss the changes on wholesale for the next version.

As far as waiting for the next BG1NPC, we have no ETA on it (still working out some things), but it will not be available in a matter of a week or three (more like January or a little later). So either settling in for a manual edit with Kulyok or running a test beta with me is probably the best answer I have for you right now. I can tell you that whether or not the diagnosis is correct, the next version will have moved this behavior to variables rather than gtimes.ids, so if it is something stripping XAROM_TIMER from the .ids and recompiling our script additions as "0", we have killed it with fire. Or at least invoked a Circle of Protection.

I'm willing to be a guinea pig for you and use the beta. I just need instructions on how to install. Would you want me to install everything exactly like my log says (except with the beta of course)? Do I test it on my current game saves or start a new game?

Hold on a bit while I get one set up for you...

There. OK, I have one for you. Send me an email at cmorganbg at gmail dot com, and I will send you a link to bg1npc_onerous.exe

The good news - in a fit of maniac paranoia and misunderstanding, and in a wish to make sure absolutely no BGT reference was accidentally left out, apparently I made pretty much every file in the darned project go through the EVALUATE_BUFFER gristmill already. So you should be able to have a straightforward game. I'll follow up in the next post with directions, because I see you are reading this thread right now...

I believe I found the culprit. I searched for all gtimes.ids backups and opened each individual files in notepad. The initial component of Sword Coast Stratagems copies the gtimes that has the proper romance timers and removes them during installation. So in essence, the timers are there before SCS installation and gone after installation.

I'll post this on SCS debug forum.

Edit: The version of SCS I had install was v26. v27 has the following bug fix:

•Fixed a bug with the extend_script function that inter alia was breaking Kaishas' interaction with the PC.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem that I had but I'll ask on the forum.

..OK.

So, the best way to check this out is make a copy of your original weidu.log before doing anything, so you have it to rely on - move that copy out of your game directory, as weidu will happily overwrite it! Leave the original weidu.log in place. Just make a copy and put it somewhere you can access it with a text editor.

Then:

1. roll back your installation one mod at a time until your WeiDU.log has the last entry as Sirene's Call. We know that nothing before BG1NPC can do damage to those timers, so your install is good up until that point.

2. Delete the now-uninstalled BG1NPC_v20: that means the whole file bg1npc, the setup-bg1npc.exe, the bg1npc.tp2, and the setup-bg1npc.debug

3. Extract the Onerous.rar to your desktop, or anywhere nice and comfy and away from any of your install folders/files, so you can keep track of it.

4. Inside the now-extracted file "Onerous", look for the folder "bg1npc", the file "setup-bg1npc.exe", and the file bg1npc.tp2

5. Copy those files into your game directory.

6. Run setup-bg1npc.exe, installing exactly what you chose last time (or as close as you can come).

7. At that point, please .rar or .zip or somehow archive a copy of the file "SETUP-BG1NPC.DEBUG" and toss it back to me at that above email address.

8. Go ahead and add back all of the other mods onto your install, trying to recreate as exactly as possible the same sequence and choices.

9. Now, try opening your game and loading your original save from before meeting Xan the first time. Proceed forward in the save. It might work - or there might be cached files somewhere that block the chages, but most likely things will work ok.... I think.

10. If the problem persists, try starting a new game, and try recruiting any BG1NPC romanceable EXCEPT Coran (who apparently would not evidence this problem, as the original was already hardcoded and just used dialog to make changes to the timers - never touched the scripts with any change.)

Either way, if you have troubles, we can grab a copy of NI and check scripts, possibly finding out what mod is messing with this.

Hah - crosspost! No worries. If you decide you want to test that personal version anyways, send me that email. With any luck, then, using the "hard-numbered" variablized version, your save would work fine, even with SCS removing the custom entries.

Thank you very much for debugging the issue! And huge thanks to cmorgan for staying on top of it, naturally(and, please, let me know if you need help in testing any changes in the new version before release, if needed. I'm guessing that if we incorporate CamDawg's proposed changes for gtimes, I need to quick-test that the romances are still working as they should, at least).

Link to comment

cmorgan,

I tested the beta briefly and the changes didn't have any impact on my saved game with SCS installed, though I expect this would be the case since SCS overrides gtimes instead of patching. So as long as a mod overrides gtimes (and the changes you make) then the bug will persist.

I've since let DavidW know that SCS was overwriting gtimes so it will probably be fixed in the next release.

I did test the beta without SCS and the dialog works as intended.

Sorry for the hassle.

Link to comment

onerous, no hassle at all - thank you for reporting and volunteering to test things.

On the saved game front.... Huh. My bet is that the saved game then included the script for Xan, which would have had the problme with compilation. The beta should have absolutely nothing to do with gtime.ids - we skip it completely.

If you still have that save, I would love to take a look at it, if you have the chance to send it my way. It might teach me a little more about the way saves work and what I can learn from them.
