Easy Tutu Fatal Crash - Brought on by Skeleton NPCs

Hi all,

 

New to the forums, I apologise if this is in the wrong section.

 

I've been encountering a fatal crash error in BG1 (EasyTutu) whenever Skeletons appear.

 

I encountered Skeletons in the Mulahey battle and they immediately crashed the game as soon as they tried to attack my party (with the error being: "An Assertion failed in ChDataTypes.cpp at line number 250").

I managed to get around that issue by laying a plethora of traps down which fortunately killed them before they could respond, thereby allowing me to progress...

 

Then I ran into another bunch of Skeletons at High Hedge and... same issue. Fatal crash with the same error.

So it seems to be entirely localized around that one creature.

 

My WeiDU log is below; I'm thoroughly stuck on this one.

If anyone has any suggestions to fix this, I'd be most appreciative. I remain hopeful that perhaps copying in a file specifically related to the skeletons into the 'override' folder may resolve the issue, but I'm open to other solutions.

What version Tutu are you using and what version of Tutufix are you using?

 

I'd also recommend that if you are going to use Tutufix to apply it much earlier. In fact, if you scroll to the bottom of the EasyTutu page you'll see a section titled Mods where Macready lists an order in which these should be installed.

 

It is possible that having something out of order caused the crashes, it is also possible to happen if you did not perform FULL installs as instructed on the EasyTutu page. Also installing inside the default location of Program Files is not wise as Windows protects it.

  • so make sure you perform full installs of both BG1 & BG2 in a location such as C:\Games or C:\Black Isle even Z:\IReallyHateHavingMyGamesHere would work :p
  • start a new game of each to a savable point to make sure that each game works & to initialize certain game files
  • then apply the correct EasyTutu installer for your particular BG2 variant
  • follow the EasyTutu page when it comes to mod order
  • start a new game
  • after leaving candlekeep go straight down to High Hedge (map accessible immediately at the bottom of current map)
  • find some skeletons and see if you still crash

if you still crash, come back and report that

if you don't crash, then let us know and enjoy your game ^^

And, the result. Unfortunately, the crash still exists despite following the right order this time.

I'll retry and test which mod is doing this soon, by doing the High Hedge check.

without having the setup here to test.... my first impression would be the EasyTutuSpawnRandomizer try without that mod and start a new game and see if it still happens

 

EasyTutu has a funky spawn system that I've not really been able to make out and so it's hard to for me to determine even which creature files should be examined to see which mod adjusted what.

 

If you've got the space, make a new EasyTutu installation and check the skeletons out without having any mods applied. If it still crashes without any mods and you've made sure you did FULL installs and the games aren't installed in Program Files then I'd redirect you to the Tutu/EasyTutu forum where Macready will hopefully be able to help you.

Hi there, it appears to first start with the EasyTutu NPC Kit Selection... bizarrely.

 

I tried a New Tutu Game (Full installs from BG and BG2 in a non-Program Files folder) with no additional files installed and the skeletons appeared, fought, died.. with no issue.

Tried another with the Degreenifier, same result, still OK...

 

Only when I tried a new game with the NPC Kit Selection did it crash when fighting a skeleton. (I think it was when the skeleton died). I fought a Ghast during that game and that was no issue, so it seems entirely originated at the skeleton npc still.

 

Baldur.ERR (with Logging On) reads:

 

ASSERTION FAILED!

File: ChDataTypes.cpp

Line: 250

 

Exp: err == Z_OK && nSizeNew-1 == nResSizeActual

 

Msg: no msg.

Run Debugger?

 

I'll post this on the forum you've mentioned; thanks for your help.

yeah that's odd. I've my own inexplicable crash when I have Infinity Animations and the Auror kit installed on any variant of BG2 engine.

 

I've never used the Easy Tutu NPC Kits as I always wanted to have the bioware npcs as they were made (as close to anyway).

Since the kit mod only assigns default kits to the NPCs you could try using Level 1 NPCs instead. With that mod you can modify each character with more control. At least it wouldn't hurt to try it...

 

One other thing you could try... if you look closely on the EasyTutu page you'll see this

Users of Windows 95 / 98 / ME and non-Windows users depending on emulation are probably better off sticking with the old installer versions, linked here: SoA ToB.

Try using that older installer & add in the mod that was causing the problem. Who knows could be something different in the conversion process. They also by happenstance support non-totsc games unlike the newest version.
