Wings: Remastered Edition

Hello!

I don't know if there are people here that are familiar with Cinemaware. This company was famous in the mid-80s for their iconic Amiga games. Cinemaware went bankrupt in the early 90s but now they're trying to re-enter the market and have started a Kickstart campaign (already 70% funded) to bring one of their classics to modern systems: Wing. Here's the link:

If you, like me, enjoyed Cinemaware's games, now this is the opportunity to show them your support. There is a demo available and they've been very faithful to the original spirit of the game.

Oh man, this was my favorite Amiga game back in primary school when I played with my mates every day:) We even kept a notebook when we wrote down each mission in details, because we didn't know how to save a game (it required to flip a safety catch in floppy disk to do it). I remember the pilot we created had over 150 kills, but the funny thing is, we didn't even end this game. We came through early 1918 and then we figured out how to save a game. And suddenly the game lost its charms :p Another fun fact is that we struggled sort of two month until we shot our first plane. Oh boy what a joy this was, what a joy.

Crap this was probably the most enjoyable gaming experience I've ever had. First time, my pilot was shot in the head was a real shocker. My first "Solo" mission was a real nightmare, but I managed to came alive, shooting 7 enemy zweidekkers with only one hit left to be shoot down myself.

But the best thing in this game was probably the pilot journal. I remember when me and my mates were struggling to make some sense of it because we didn't know much English at a time and we caught only single phrases. Each mention of Red Baron and Flying Circus brought a blush on our cheeks as we tried to plunge into the whole story.

Magnifico, truly a gem:)

Now...to the Kickstarter page:)

LOL Kick Off.......the memories.... :D Take that, FIFA 2014!

Out of all those epic games (I never owned Amiga, but had a 286 PC for a long time) I probably liked the most:

Commander Keen series

Stunts

Dune 2

Civilization 1

Another World (this had a remake)

Secret of Monkey Island 1

Syndicate

Titus the Fox (amazing game)

and Golden Axe.

PC Speaker galore! :D

In my end also (from the top of my head)

Ishar

Dungeon Master

Defender of the Crown

Centurion

Gunship 2000

F22 Retaliator

Mortal Kombat 1 & 2

and Polish game Cytadela (Citadel)

there were many more games which I can't recall right now.

Ehh...good times indeed.

It's a great game.

I am not playing yet because I pledged a rather hefty sum for the physical copy and I wait for it. But I played the Demo and I was very satisfied. Of course it is important to consider that this is a game pulled on a 90.000$ budget which is practically nothing for modern games.

I recommend also buying Rocket Ranger Reloaded (http://gibberlings3.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=26861) which was my fav Cinemaware classic.

The price is pretty good for both titles and I am sure there will be many hours of unadultered fun.

I forget whether I ever got around to playing Cinemaware's "Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon" or whether it was worth playing. Did you? Don't think it was a big hit, but anything with swashbuckling, shipwrecks and cyclopes should've been right up my alley.

I played all Cinemaware's games in the golden days and, of course, I played "Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon" too.

I would call it a minor production in terms of overall quality but enjoyable enough. It was purely action-based, if I remember correctly, and some sequences were uninspired/repetitive. I don't remember how it ended and if I ever completed it but let's say that other Cinemaware games were much more successful (with the exception of The Three Stoges, maybe - the only one I didn't really like).

The true gems from Cinemaware (in my opinions) were: Rocket Ranger (the best), The King of Chicago and It Came from the Desert. S.D.I. was also potentially a great game but didn't live up to its own ambition (a bit like "Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon"...). Wings had a great atmosphere and sense of immersion but as gameplay itself was nothing to write home about while Defender of the Crown was charming and engaging but very limited in scope. "Lords of the Rising Sun" was a better strategy game but marred by an awful action sequence that ruined the game completely (trying to defend against the assassination attempts was practically impossible, for me at least).

The two sports series games (Basketball and Football) were good but not exceptional.

I played the crap out of this game once I finally figured out how to joust and swordfight properly (it was much easier with a joystick, practically impossible on the PC port). But you are right, it was sort of like a "Risk" with medieval fighting elements. And some small romance IIRC - you could marry another lord's ward and consolidate a larger kingdom or something. For what it was, it was well done though IMO.

They remade this game for consoles (and perhaps PC, "Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown") but it wasn't great on PS2, or at any rate I never really got past the opening sequence or two. It wasn't even that similar as I recall.

Apparently, some eGames company acquired Cinemaware and remade the original a few years back, but I have no idea how that was.
