"Commoner Drab Colors" Bug?

FarleySquad

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Just gotten back into BG2 via enhanced editions, and loving the changes that the Tweak Pack brings.

Minor issue though; I installed the "commoner drab color" component which then proceded to change most NPCs to look like living chocolates. Brown-ish over both skins and clothing. Kind of amusing, but also a bit annoying!

I tried reinstalling it, and when that didn't work uninstalling it, but the effects remain.

The only other mod I have installed is Dungeon-Be-Gone.

Appreciate your time! :)

Uninstalling the mod should reverse the effects. At least, it should for areas you haven't visited yet (the technicalities for areas you've already visited are a bit obtuse, but it should reverse those as well for the most part).

This could be due to some incompatibility between what the mod does to randcolr.2da and what EE does, though I couldn't say without further investigation (e.g. looking at Tweaks' code - I'll leave that to CamDawg, though he seems to be a bit scarce these days).

As an addendum to my comment above, here's the Weidu log from my latest install:

In Athkatla, I noticed that 'Hes' (the merchant) is not bugged, but his neighbor Galoomp (who uses the same avatar) is completely brown. Most NPCs in Athkatla are also brown.

I may do some further testing to see if I can narrow down the issue.

I checked out the code and found 2 things.

1) It's not updated for BG2EE, which has about twice as many entries for each random palette to choose from. This means that only half of the colours are guaranteed to be drab, so some commoners may be drab and some may not.

2) There is a bug that may cause unknown side effects. I didn't experience anyone turning all brown, but it was the only oddity I could find.

If you want to try a fix for the bug and see if that solves this problem, read on.

You can either modify randcolr.2da manually or change the .tp2 and reinstall the mod. Either way, creatures in areas you've already visited in the game will be unaffected. For testing, you can CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("SHOP8") for an extra Galoomp.

Option 1: modifying randcolr.2da:

The fourth row in the file should contain a list of numbers (0 200 201 202 ...). The entries for 208, 209, 212, and 213 have been replaced with 107, 64, 107, and 64. They should be reverted back. Save the file in the override and you're good to go.

Option 2: modifying the .tp2 to reinstall:

The code at line 371 should look like this.

This rings a bell. Presumably the palette entries in BG2EE are derived from the 1ppv4 component 'extended palette entries'. I also have this component installed on my non-EE game. Could this be the culprit?

Link to comment

Bingo.

The Extended Palette Component in 1PP ships its own randcolr.2da that has a mixture of different linebreaks. When something like the Drab Colors component modifies the .2da using WeiDU's SET_2DA_ENTRY, the resulting file can't be read properly by the game. Since it can't figure out what random colours to choose, it makes things brown instead.

Affected users can modify randcolr.2da in the override to correct the error (1PPExtOne and 1PPExtTwo belong with the other labels in the row above). The easiest long-term fix is for 1PP to replace the randcolr.2da it copies over with this one.

The randcolr.2da in my BG2EE install doesn't seem to suffer from the same problem as the one in 1PP, so I'm not sure why this bug would happen on that platform, unless the .2da was fixed in a patch.
