Dermin's second appearance

Guest Guest

Recommended Posts

Seems to be causing a ctd, which I've NEVER experienced in any configurations until this last one where I installed Fixpack. It's the one where you rest outdoors and jaheira says "stop, do you see him? get ready etc." as Dermin reappears. As soon as I rest at this point, the game freezes and crashes.

Anyone have any clues what might need to be done to fix this? Again, I've never had this problem in previous games before installing the fixpack, which, while not conclusive, makes me suspect that may be where the problem lies.

Thanks for any help.

Correction, it's Dermin's THIRD appearance, not his second.

Cheers, I'll look into it. Is this with the latest beta? SoA/ToB, Windows/OS X?

yes yes and yes-here's the weidu log (btw you'll notice I'm using components of both g3tweaks and bg2 tweaks-the reason is that certain components of bg2tweaks still seem buggy, such as the SOA loadscreen logo. I installed that component from bg2tweaks initially without having g3tweaks installed, and the ToB logo continued to show up, so I uninstalled it and installed it from g3tweaks and it worked. I also installed a few other components that I knew from previous installs that were reliable from g3tweaks. As far as I'm concerned, my experiences with Baldurdash vs BG2Fixpack and G3Tweaks vs BG2Tweaks leaves me with the conclusion at thtis point that Fixpack and Bg2Tweaks are still beta-ish/buggy whereas the older BD and G3tweaks are more reliable:

Thanks for the response/help btw, I'm not complaining about the fact that youre putting in work to make great mods, just pointing out that the newer versions still seem to need work... I can't recall the specific problems I had other than what I've mentioned off the top of my head right now, but I do know I experienced a couple of other issues while in game and thought I could live with them and didn't bother to take note.

One thing I do recall, the shadowmasters key, is that intentionally not disappearing from inventory unlike all other keys (not counting symbol of amaunator)?

Again, I do appreciate the work put into mods like this to try and enhance people's experience of the game.

Having said that, I've come to the conclusion at this point that I should not have installed the Fixpack at this point because it's still in beta status and is not proven like Baldurdash was... this is not the first show stopper bug I've had with Fixpack installed-I've had another one with an earlier version-as you can imagine it's frustrating because at this point I cannot continue the game and need to start over again unless a fix is found.

I did look at Dermin's cre file and realized he wears a minhp1 item which HAS BEEN altered by the Fixpack, but I don't think this is the problem since trying to play with the item removed from the override folder didn't fix it.... but it could be potentially any number of things that Fixpack 'improved' that may be a factor here, perhaps an item Dermin is wearing, or any of his goons are wearing, scripts for them, etc etc

If I do get around to restarting the game I intend to go back to Baldurdash unfortunately; my reason? There are way too many changed components added by the Fixpack which at this point is clearly in beta stage and as of yet unproven, any of which could potentially be buggy and may be causing such problems that BD did not cause. It seems at this point that the Fixpack solves some minor issues but at this stage may be causing new ones.

A couple of points:

I installed that component from bg2tweaks initially without having g3tweaks installed, and the ToB logo continued to show up, so I uninstalled it and installed it from g3tweaks and it worked.

The code for the SoA load screen in both mods is identical.

~SETUP-UB.TP2~ #0 #18 // Restored Minor Dialogs

As mentioned in the readme, this component is currently incompatible with the Fixpack.

Do you mean the Shadow Thief Cellar Key? If so, it's used in four doors and two items; being consumed by any one of them would deny access to the other five.

Dermin himself isn't the issue, as he's spawned successfully twice (same creature for all three encounters). The lump sum of changes to the four goons and Dermin:

  • three alignment changes
  • one race correction
  • one sex correction
  • All use gpshout, a common script which underwent two corrections to broken Dead triggers

As for items, it can't be Dermin's inventory as he's already spawned successfully twice. The goons all use common items, so if an item was the issue it probably would have been encountered already.

Help me narrow this down--could you try spawning jade1-4 via console and see if any of them cause the crash? A save game won't be terribly useful as it would still use my local resources (scripts, items, cre files, dialogues, etc.).

As mentioned in the readme, this component is currently incompatible with the Fixpack.

The Fixpack is designed to work with Baldur's Gate II with or without the Throne of Bhaal expansion pack. In terms of installation order, the Fixpack should be installed after the official patches, but before other mods. There are a few known incompatibilities:
Ashes of Embers (as of v26): The 'Anomen wielding swords and crossbows' component will cause a crash to desktop when encountering Anomen.
Baldur's Gate Trilogy (WeiDU): The changes made by the Fixpack to the area script of the dungeon can conflict with the bg to BG2 transition. Temporary workarounds are available until a long-term solution is found; take a look in the BGT forum for the latest information

Mmm, if I've got the right 'Fixpack' (BG2 Fixpack), it doesn't seem to be mentioned in the readme.

Oh. Crap.

I've commented out that section (Gliacias fix) in the fixpack tp2 file so UB's version won't conflict with Fixpack's version.

I dunno about the Loadscreen, I would assume they're not supposed to be different, but... all I know is I tried reinstalling BG2Tweak's version a couple of times and it didn't work. I uninstalled it one more time, installed it with G3weaks, and bingo, it works. I had graphic corruption problems with the loadscreen from the previous version of BG2Tweaks, so something apparently isn't right/exactly the same.

Jade 1-4?? are those cre files?

Also, there is at least one difference between the final appearance of Dermin and the previous two appearances (aside from his goons being with him). As I noted above, there's a script that tells the final Dermin to destroy the minhp1 item; that's why I thought maybe this has something to do with the source of the problem-the previous appearances do not have any such script. I thought perhaps that changes made to the minhp1 item by Fixpack may be causing an error when the script to destroy this item tries to run.

Ok, I found JADE1-4 and spawned them, no problems, same with dermin himself, although none of them had dialogue when spawned via the cluaconsole command... but I did find something suspicious that I'm going to try follow up on; I'm wondering if the lovetalk sequence might be causing a conflict with the appearance somehow, which I would think is not caused by Fixpack... let me look into this and report what I find. Perhaps Fixpack isn't at fault here, although I don't understand why this never happened before, and since this is the first time I actually installed Fixpack and started playing it aroused my suspicion especially when I saw the minhp1 item was modified...

Link to comment

*sigh* The lovetalk turns out not to be an issue apparently. It has to do with the appearance/spawning of Dermin and goons itself. Since cluaconsoling the creatures didn't seem to cause freeze/crash, I'm guessing there's a problem with the dialog or script that's set to activate when they spawn...

any clues? I'm not sure at this point if it's Fixpack or not, but again, I have never had this happen before installing Fixpack. Any help is appreciated very much.
