Ranged swashbuckler kit?

Grim Squeaker

Recommended Posts

Just an idea. I'm sure its been suggested before but, a kit that is basically a ranged swashbuckler would be quite cool. They'd be able to put 2 stars into ranged weapons and 1 in melee ones. No backstab obviously. Not sure what the equivolent of the 2-handed style would be for an archer thief though... Maybe just a new ability or something. Limited call shot? Something like that...

Anyway, its the sort of thing I'd kit Immy or Nalia with...

Bad timing Grim given the fact that Idobek has just finished their kits after a long discussion, but I think the sniper idea for a thief is nice. TDD lurks though, since archers do most of what you described above.

I like the idea of a ranged weapons specialist thief kit, however, I think it is entirely wrong for Imoen and Nalia. A marksman/archer/sniper is the ideal first strike weapon. They effectively backstab from a distance. If backstabbing is not right for Imoen and Nalia, how is putting an arrow through someone's eye at 100 paces any better?

I'm not suggesting like an uber-archer type. We aren't talking Legolas or anything. We're talking like... a thief who is good with using a bow in a tight spot as opposed to someone who knows 'how to use a bow and thats it' or the Legloas type.

I assume that Imoen hasn't been practicing much with a sword but I think she might have done some archery back in candlekeep and during BG1 she'd prefer to keep at the back firing some arrows as opposed to sneaking around and backstabbing.

Imoen just seems to be a natural archer. I've only ever had her in melee when my arrows weren't good enough to hurt what I was fighting and I really needed to kill the thing quick.

A Robin Hood style kit foir a thief could be quite interesting. Useful as an alternate to a Fighter class archer.

The only time I've ever used Imoen in melee is in Chateau Irenicus when she doesn't have a bow and arrows. If the arrows aren't enough to do the job, I just have her cast spells.

Posted by me over at Ironworks on 3/28:

SHARPSHOOTER

Class: Thief

Race: Any

Alignment: Any except Lawful Good

ADVANTAGES:

  • Can reach Mastery (+++) in any missile weapon a Thief can use (Short Bow, Crossbow, Sling, Darts)

  • +1 to THAC0 and Damage with missile weapons every 4 levels

  • Special Ability of Called Shot every 6 levels

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Only 20 Thieving Points to distribute per level

  • Backstab Multiplier capped at x3

A very modest kit, but quite worthwhile, in my opinion. Many's the time I've wished I could trade my Thief's having 150% in every skill for the ability to actually hit something when he shoots.

heck, a lot of the fan fics start out imoen as being really into bows and arrows, which make a lot of real world sense, since ranged is always better than melee, less chances of getting hurt, and as pointed out imoen starts with bow and arrow...

include the same bonuses for dagger..(i.e. throwing daggers) and i like it... :D
