What's your party in BG1?

 

Mine is usually Coran, Kivan, Xan, Jaheira and Khalid.

Good aligned: Minsc, Dynaheir, Jaheira, Khalid, Imoen (if PC is mage, replace Dyna for Kivan). Yeslick and Coran usually get the boot because they come later in the game.

 

Evil aligned: Viconia, Montaron, Shar-teel, Kagain, Edwin

For me there is no "usually", since I must've gone through BG1 like... thrice, in my entire life (yes, I know, hard to believe!).

I tried the "canon config" once: Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, Dynaheir. I think I even played pally that time around, so it was the "goody-two-shoes" group!

 

I also tried: Coran, Alora, Xan, Ajantis, Kivan. (game which I saved at a crucial turnpoint in order to try out the three romances of BG1 NPC Project. Kudos to you guys who made that mod!! You cannot be thanked enough!)

 

And third run through, I think I recall going: Ajantis, Minsc (Dyna died, poor thing), Xan (I'm rather fond of that gloomy elf, to use an euphemism), Gavin (had to try out that mod/romance, congrats to Berelinde on her hard work, loved the laundry flirt), Yeslick.

I typically build parties around a core group of PC, Garrick and Faldorn.

 

After that its a little more random. Some parties I have run ...

Female PC, BioWare only: Eldoth, Faldorn, Garrick, Imoen, Skie

Female PC, to see the conflicts: Ajantis, Coran, Gavin, Imoen, Xan

Male PC, heroic party: Ajantis, Dynaheir, Gavin, Imoen, Minsc

Male PC, BioWare only (classic): Dynaheir, Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc

Male PC, BioWare only (elves): Coran, Dynaheir, Imoen, Kivan, Xan

Khalid, Kivan, Branwen, Imoen, Safana, though I'll swap those out quite a bit depending what I need at the time. PC usually a fighter kit or F/T. So I aim for having 2 fighters, 2 archers (Imoen can sub in there in a pinch), 2 or 3 thieves (I like thieves, and specialisation is necessary early in BG1), a healer and a mage (again, Imoen after she duals).

 

Of course, the Level 1 NPCs mod makes all this a lot more flexible now...

 

Thought I'd reproduce this from Lugnutz's BG Walkthrough:

1. Best crew: Dwarf Fighter/Cleric, Kagain, Kivan, Coran, Edwin, Xzar. If you max your Constitution and use the Tome, you can have a 20, which gives you regeneration. Add in Kagain with the Gauntlets of Dex, and you have a pair of wrecking machines. You'll save a lot of spells and potions by having 2 characters that regenerate their hit points.

2. All Evil crew: Dwarf Fighter/Cleric, Kagain, Shar-Teel, Montaron, Edwin, Xzar. Notice how similar it is to the best crew.

3. All Good crew: Dwarf Fighter/Cleric, Kivan, Minsc, Coran, Dynaheir, Imoen. Imoen should be dual-classed into a Conjurer as soon as possible (in order to get to a high enough level to cast Level 5 spells).

4. All magic crew: Elf mage/thief, Yeslick, Viconia or Branwen, Edwin, Xzar, Imoen. Imoen should be a dual-classed to an Illusionist as soon as you get her (to keep with the theme). This game is a lot more difficult, but is very fun!

5. Rogues' Guild: Gnome Cleric/Thief, Montaron, Coran, Shar- Teel, Garrick, Eldoth Kron. Shar-Teel can be dualled into a thief, which will give you a better fighter than the rest of your options you could have instead.

6. All Crazy crew: Dwarf Fighter (Chaotic Neutral), Minsc, Tiax, Xzar, Quayle, Safana. Safana's not really crazy, but she is Chaotic Neutral, so I picked her. That would be quite the crew to listen in on. Especially if you give the main character an opposite voice (female voice on a guy, etc)

Yes, it's a vanilla BG1 (and BG2) feature. It's a standard 2E AD&D rule.
