Rakshasas and Breach

Hi,

 

I was just fighting the Trademeet Rakshasas and noticed that the Breach spell doesn't work on them, even though I installed the 'more consistent breach spell' component from SCS. The combat log returns the message 'spell ineffective', and the rakshasas have no spell protections active.

It should affect them, and it doesn't. It's a bug.

I did a change-log and it seems the component doesn't touch rakring.itm at all, but it does seem to correctly change lich.itm (these seem to be the items that grant raks and liches their immunities).

 

As a temporary solution, I edited rakring.itm using Near Infinity to remove the spell level 5 immunity (under effects), and copied and pasted the specific level 5 immunities from lich.itm (all files relating to SPDR501 SPWI508 SPWI503 SPWI506 SPWI514 SPWI523 SPPR503 SPPR517 SPPR505D, including those with a dw prefix).

 

Breach now works on them, and other level 5 spells don't (though they don't give the message 'spell ineffective' - combat log just shows nothing).

IMO an issue with SCS's implementation is that instead of having a blanket immunity of 5th level spells, the breach component makes the liches/rakshasas immune to a certain list of spells that is determined manually. This can be an issue if mod spells are installed or a spell might be left out.

 

There is an even better solution to this. It takes advantage of an obscure engine behavior when calculating what spells willl be deflected/turned/spelltrapped. When a spell hits a turned/trapped/deflected creature, only the power level of the first effect in the effects list is taken into consideration. For example, if a spell's very first effect has a power level of 5 followed by a series of effects with a power level of 9, then spell turning/deflection/trap returns the entire spell as if a 5th level spell. Meanwhile, the effects that have a power level of 9 will still burn through opcode 102 (protection from spell levels) because opcode 102 is hardcoded to check for every effect. Note that setting the power level to 0 will not work because spell turning/trap/deflection do not cover 0th level spells. This trick works in BG2:ToB as well as BG2:EE.

 

Simply set all of the effects' power levels in SPWI513.spl to 9. Then, place a dummy effect right at the front of the effects list of the extended header with a power level of 5. That dummy effect can be something that bestows an AC bonus of 0 for a duration of 0. Make sure to set the sectype from MAGICALATTACK (4) to NONE (0) because any spell with sectype MAGICATTACK (4) is hardcoded to burn through any/all protections/deflections/turnings/traps (including opcode 102).

Yes, I modified the vanilla version of Breach so place it before installing SCS. Then you don't even need to install SCS's consistent Breach component. Note that I made a modification of vanilla BG2's Breach spell, so the strings might be off if you copy this over to BG:EE or IWD:EE. Otherwise, it should work for all games concerned.

 

I will add this as a new component in the upcoming release of SpellPackB7.

Copy the weidu.log file from the game folder to someplace else so you can read it, run the setup-scs.exe again and uninstall everything, then repalce the spell file with the arvicve above, and reinstall SCS. Simple, easy.

If you have not installed the "More consistent Breach" component the simplest way is to download the file Galactygon provides above and put it in the [bG2 install dir]\override.

 

Otherwise you could try restoring "lich.itm" and "dw#licim.spl" from the scs backup folder. If I got this correctly you should look at [bG2 install dir]\stratagems_external\backup\stratagems\2010. Copy those two in override along with the downloaded breach. Keep in mind that I have not actually tried to do this, because I don't have BGEE or installed that component, so please exercise come caution (keep backups etc.).

 

If that's too confusing then follow Jarno's advice and reinstall SCS without the consistent Breach component.

I don't know technically but that's what I would do:

 

backup my saves and SPWI513 file. then copy the modified SPWI513 file into override anyway and just see/test what will happen.

or

backup all saves and reinstall the game (I mean uninstall completely, remove the game folder and install again). replace the file and then reinstall SCS in the exact same way it was installed before. Saves should be compatible I think. And then see if the modified spell works on the old save because as I said technically/theoretically I have no friggin idea.

Only Jarno's suggested way will work flawlessly; that's why I wrote above to use Galactygon's file before you install SCS, not after. What you would get is a Breach that doesn't get stopped by Spell Shield, while the one SCS uses does. (not the end of the world, but it's fairly inconsistent).

You could hack it a bit to work however, rename the spwi513 Galactygon uploaded here into spwi513b and put into your override.
