Guest Jiggaman391@yahoo.com
I'm making a mod and I want to shrink the maps as much as possible. There is a utility program out there that will compress them better than winrar-I have the utility but I forgot the name. Any who - does anybody know what the command line to pack the files are, also - when I make a mod does everybody have to unzip them of can I make it into an self extracting files? Link to comment
Smoketest
I believe you're looking for info on TISPack, but since I don't use programs that throw away data (I detest lossy compression in any form), someone who knows how to use this utility will have to provide the info. A self-extracting EXE should be fine, provided you have the TP2 file call a batch file that will use TISPack to unpack the compressed maps. Link to comment
CamDawg
TISpack uses non-lossy compression with the -q 100 flag, otherwise you will lose some data. If you've downloaded TISpack already, take a look at manual.html; it explains how to use tispack and tisunpack at the command line and all the various flags. The only potential drawback to using a self-extracting archive is that it can potentially not work for the Mac folks. A rar or zip SFX will work fine (since they can open it manually) but something using, say, an NSIS install program will make it unavailable. Link to comment
jcompton
There's not a whole heck of a lot of point using TISpack in -q 100 mode, though, since the compression level is basically indistinguishable from, say, the deepest level of RAR compression. -q 85 is satisfactory for most everyone not known as Smoketest. Smoketest
-q 85 is satisfactory for most everyone not known as Smoketest. Many of my friends are the same sticklers for quality that I am. Our customers are definitely thankful for that. Link to comment
icelus
Paying customers are one thing. Keeping those of us on dialup (myself included) happy by slicing down file size with negligable quality loss is what we're discussing here. Link to comment
Smoketest
Heh, I know Icelus, but as I've said before, if a mod is deemed "worth it" by me, I'll grab it regardless of the size. And I don't keep a seperate set of standards for my offtime and my work time; I'm the same way all the time. Link to comment

Guest Guest
This mod could easily be 200mb with tis, probably 500-700 without. I guess it's a matter of getting space to get it out. Link to comment
Avenger
Tispack has some merit if you have many large areas and use the version with multiple files capability. Some quality loss is unnoticeable if you don't know the original. Link to comment
