Well, perhaps I don't want to visit the ancestral homestead after all... I will just stick to Bristol-by-the-Sea, and Glasgow for the branch of the family up there (plus I could see parts of East Yorkshire, I think I have a cousin teaching school there...) Yup, off, off, off - topic -- seconding the request for cool pictures!

I met up with Cam yesterday. We spent several hours in the pub...
So where's the pix (preferably after several pints)? C'mon, everyone else has 'em.
...discussing the reasons why things would be so much better if we were running the world (modding and real).
Don't you already? :p

I think it's a sad state of affairs that I booked two consecutive hotels with Internet connections and neither works. Can someone please make the UK Internets compatible with the US ones? :p

I'm currently in O'Hare airport in Chicago on my way home to Kentucky--a long way of saying that I can't upload photos of Alec and I until I get home later. But yeah, it was a blast meeting everyone and I wish we had gotten some photos of when Andy, Dave (lennon) and I met as well, as it was the one meet-up at which we didn't have any cameras.

The UK was just as expensive as I remember it. Some other random observations:

  • I don't know what 'busking' is, but I do know it'll cost me 200 pounds on the Tube.
  • On the subject of the Tube, I was disappointed that 'Mind the Gap' is no longer plastered over every spare inch of the trains, and also seems absent from many of the announcements.
  • Andy assures me that Trinity College at Oxford is far, far superior to Balliol.
  • The US really needs 1 and 2 dollar coins like the British 1 and 2 pound coins. I can't tell you how much easier these are than notes. (Yes, I know the US actually has two different $1 coins, but do you know anyone who actually uses them?)
  • It rained in Scotland. Though it's my understanding that this is par for the course.
  • The other pub I visited in Oxford was the Turf Tavern, where Bill Clinton didn't inhale during his time there.
  • I did not get to test Andy's legendary drinking ability, mainly because I'm such a lightweight.
  • US airport security is now a more horrific process than Heathrow security, something which I never would have thought possible.
  • Dave and I went to an excellent Indian place in Edinburgh named The Indian Place.

Mrs. CamDawg (technically Dr., or as icelus dubbed her, Dr. Feelgood) made it to the first meetup with Andy, and I'll also post the pic of the three of us once I get back. (In the meantime, our wedding pic is in my profile if you want to see her. :p ) Will rejoin the online world and try to catch up once I'm home.

We have 1 and 2 Euro coins in Italy (and, well, the rest of civilized Europe), and since those have been in use my wallet weights about two pounds - while it weighted half a pound when 1000, 2000 and 5000 "Italian pounds" notes were in use (~~= .50, 1 and 2 euro).

I was already very sorry not to have managed to rendezvous with you guys when you were in Oxford, but I'm doubly sorry now I see the misinformation which Andy has spread. As everyone right-thinking knows, Balliol is infinitely superior.

You folks just don't read good mystery novels... *everyone* knows that Peter Wimsey (Dorothy L. Sayers' famous sleuth) went to Balliol, by far the more dignified of the colleges (in her opinion :p )

Besides, we Oberlin folks like to smile benignly on the unenlightened, and say "Oxford? Oh, Daaaahling, that is the Oberlin of the United Kingdom" :p )
