NPC Handling Issues

Long time lurker, first time commenter. For ages I've put off modding Baldur's Gate because, well, I had some way bad experiences with it crashing like hell in the past. I recently discovered the BiG World Setup to install BGT and was excited to finally try it out without having a complete mental breakdown. Things seem to be running smoothly, no crashes so far but when I get to The Friendly Amn Inn and decide to finally try out some of the NPC stuff from this mod (namely telling them to go to inns and being able to easily split pairs), I find that no dialogue options seem to deal with that. Instead, the NPCs seem to hang around and offer very neutral responses. Its an improvement from them simply storming off in a huff (as Monty and Xzar are so fond of doing), but I really would like to be able to juggle my party and I'm not sure how to get the option to split characters or send them off to the inn. Obviously, come recruiting Minsc and Edwin, this is apt to be a problem so I thought I'd see about squashing this sooner rather than later.

I don't have a lot of experience with mods or the setup - all I know is it said the two components (Allow NPC pairs to separate and NPCs go to inns) didn't conflict with anything and that no other mod component had preference to them. If I've missed something I don't know and I don't know how to consult the list of currently installed mods so that I can provide it in case of conflict. I'm not sure which forum is appropriate to take this to, either - here or to... wherever the BiG World Setup stuff is discussed but I thought I'd come here first as this seemed to be the most straight forward place and most of what I can find on BiG World is in German. I'm still kind of new to all this and I'd appreciate any help I can get. I've been eager to play the trilogy for years now and I've always held off until I could get the most out of it. If I can provide any details that would help, I'm glad to but I might need some guidance on how to provide the details in question.

Thanks in advance!

and I'm not sure how to get the option to split characters or send them off to the inn.

The weidu.log file in your game folder has a basically a list of the mods you have installed. You can open the file with Notepad.

If you picked the option in the BiG World Setup to install that part of this mod, it usually installs them just fine, unless it reports errors and so forth.

The SHSforums has a Mega Mod Help forum where all the BiG World related questions usually can be asked and gained answer in the most efficient way, in English. Not that you can't ask this here too, as there's members like me that go on multiple forums.

Now having the Minsc and Edwin in BG1 is still likely going to kinda be a problem still as one wishes to kill the witch while the other wishes to save her... with has nothing to do with pairing the NPCs themselves.

Oh, I know that wouldn't be an issue of pairs - but Dynaheir would be, haha. I deliberately went through the setup of all the mods it was installing, mostly to make sure I disabled things that let me cast in armour since that feels wrong to me and enable a few things that basically bordered on my own 2e house rules.

I think I've found the WeiDU log file and can probably post/upload it if the forum lets you upload to posts. Ctrl-Fing through it for "split" and "Pairs" doesn't turn up anything so unless the component is unstalled under a single heading or something then I think something may have gone wrong in the installation.

Ctrl-Fing through it for "split" and "Pairs" doesn't turn up anything ...

The exact name of the component is "Allow BG1 NPC pairs to separate", so if you had the letter size requirement, then both of those will turn up nothing... it's far more efficient if you look for the word npc without the letter size and you'll find a lots of things.

PS, the BWS has the option to fully edit the mods you are about to install all the way up to the exact components, so you were likely to just skip a lots of that if you didn't notice it and you really should reinstall(that portion is before the mods are actually downloaded by the way). Hopefully you knew this...

And the uninstalls also show up in the weidu.log file, so the likely possibility is that you didn't actually pick the component.

Its not turning up in the log and I already went through the selection to make sure it was installed in advance and saved my selection as a txt file. When I hit "latest selection" in the installer just now, it was missing basically everything so I think something might have screwed up. I take it reinstalling the mods isn't apt to help at this point? Should I go from scratch?

It might have been that you actually reset the selection to minimal and didn't then load the saved selection you made previously, so it's missing everything.

Should I go from scratch?

Yep, probably.

Spent the day reinstalling the mod and the weidu log still doesn't mention a darn thing about it =/

Submitting the file in the post. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong really. At some point the installer complained about my CD drive and at another point there was an error and the installer had to pick it up again after a while but it seemed to be functioning.

OK, so you are using the latest official BWS, you probably need to use the actual latest version ... which you get by going here and instead of downloading the 20150302 again, push the Branches and then click the zip to download the master branches archive.

I already used the latest set up and manually configured the specific mods. I'm a bit confused as to why its not working at this point, maybe I need to set it back to scratch again, set it to Tactics and disable the mods that I definitely don't want in that bundle. I'm not sure at this stage as to what I'm doing wronth otherwise because it seems to install, the game seems to work, many mods are clearly running but I can't send the NPCs to the inn even though I know the mod components were selected for installation specifically =/

Well, the BWS makes a print out of all the info it shows.... it should be called "BiG World Debug.txt", unfortunatelly I forgot the location will be in. It's large text file, but you can cut the size about 20-200 times if you package it in a .zip archive.

I already used the latest set up ...

Are you sure... cause the weidu.log says you used the ~SETUP-BWS.TP2~ #0 #0 // 20150302, and that's not the latest !

It was updated many times after, say like here, it's ...

~SETUP-BWS.TP2~ #0 #0 // 20150515 - Updated by Silent

So back to the picture:

So you need to use that zip archive, not the main one that's "bws_20150302.exe", as that's outdated by a lots.

On trying to reinstall, I had this error. I think I had this error before but before I didn't write it down - it closed and then I continued set up. This time I'm going to hold off on continuing but this is what the setup said:

Tweaked Weapon Enchantments (Ding0's Tweak Pack) was installed successfully.
Additional Racial Enemies (Ding0's Tweak Pack) was installed successfully.

ERROR: illegal 2-byte read from offset 1011650 of 7826-byte file SPWI317.SPL
ERROR: [sPWI317.SPL] -> [override/SPWI317.SPL] Patching Failed (COPY) (Failure("SPWI317.SPL: read out of

bounds"))
ERROR: Failure("SPWI317.SPL: read out of bounds")
Summonning Cap Removal (Ding0's Tweak Pack) was not installed due to errors.
The following will not be installed without the component:

Sword Coast Stratagems

Macholy's Teammates Fight Scripts:
0000: Install Macholy's fight scripts V3.1 -> Compatible with SCSI&II

(An error message popped up containing the following at this point)

Line 617 (File I:\Games\Black Isle\BiG World Setup Folder\BiG World Setup\Includes\16_Select-Tree.au3"):

$Num=StringRegExp($Found[0], '\x2c', 3)
$Num=StringRefExp($Found^ ERROR

Error: Subscript used with non-Array variable

(at this point the set up crashed)

Just saw the other thing mentioned - about the branch thing? I haven't tried that before but I'll try installing it that way now. I fear I'm probably going to see the same error but I'm at least going to try it! Thank you so much for the help so far by the way, sincerely appreciate it.

After a very long night with the setup, I think before it basically wasn't installing SCS at all - with the updated setup it took a lot longer and a lot of that was installing scripts for SCS. I threw on a TOB character so I could cut a swathe to the inn easily and found that the mod and components now work! Thank you so much for the assistance! Now I just have to figure out how to get through all these "Orc A"s, haha.
