Waukeen's Promenade crash, Core Fixes 10

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I encounter a crash when trying to travel to Waukeen's Promenade in Chapter 2. The level loads, but shortly after it crashes.

I'm running BG2:Shadows of Amn under Wine on Ubuntu Linux. The latest patch is installed. The only mod installed is BG2 Fixpack 10, Core Fixes. It was installed using Linux weidu 236 and I used tolower with both options Y. This is a fresh install (I reinstalled after the bug first occurred.) The crash occurs both with and without general biffing (which I use because the game lags under Wine with an ext filesystem.)

The crash is gone when removing the fixpack.

It started to happen after I had done the circus, went to the Copper Coronet and to the City gate. I then tried to travel to Trademeet but met the Renfeld group. I had killed Suna Seni's group and delivered Renfeld to the Harpers.

Thereafter, i could no longer return to the Promenade without crash.

It *was* possible to travel between the slums and the promenade early on in Chapter 2, so something happened after that and made it inaccessible. I have a feeling it might have been Suna Seni or Renfeld.

I'm now much further into the game and the crash still happens predictably.

I have no baldur.err.

The wine/windows error text is here:

I am willing to help track this down.

Thinking on, it might also have been that one of the vampire encounters was trying to play on the promenade level. I don't see any vampires before the level crashes though. I think I did see the Valen encounter in a different part of the city though (I already met with Bodhi in this game now, so I think I must have encountered Valen and the promenade still crashes despite that.)

I see someone else reported the exact same crash on this forum not long ago, under Windows.

So, I have more information about this. I now have two savegames. One has the crash and one doesn't.

In both savegames, I killed Suna Seni and met Hareishan (the first vampire.) The difference is simpy this: To produce the crash, I travelled from the city gates towards Trademeet. I got ambushed and killed the waylayers. I then returned to the city gates / the slums. If I then try to go to Waukeen's, the crash happens.

It makes no difference if I actually continue to Trademeet or if I return to the city directly after being ambushed. Leaving the city and being ambushed alone is enough to make Waukeen's crash afterwards.

It also makes no difference if I leave my summons behind on the ambush map, or if I wait until they are unsummoned.

In this game, I also did not even do the circus or the copper coronet. I just slept once or so, to restore my summons, then went to the city gate (killing Suna Seni on the way), got the Trademeet quest, slept in the inn, met Hareishan, then left for Trademeet and killed the waylayers. This is enough to create the crash.

Killing Suna Seni on its own does NOT provoke the crash; only leaving the city does. My waylayers this time around were also not the Renfeld group, but a mixed group with orogs, IIRC. So Renfeld also has nothing to do with it.

Savegames attached.

OK, it seems the BG2 fixpack 10 is no longer in development. I got a few more bugs, including crashes, with it.

It would be nice if it was somehow marked as a beta on the download page then so users would know to expect bugs.

I remember Fixpack 9 working pretty well, I think I'll just install that then. :)
