Avoiding ESeries Slowdown

Greetings again! ;)

Now, the problem I am having at present results, I think, from one or two issues. I'm having a very hard time nailing it down to anything specific.

I like the ESeries and I like how much it improves your companions. Micromanagement is always a headache for me in BG, and I try to limit it.

However, when I make use of the ESeries Scripts, using the fixes I talked about in other threads to make it work with Ascension and Kelsey, I have had a slowdown issue.

I've mostly been advised that this issue is a result of the size of my override file, and the only thing I can do is limit how many mods I install at any one time. As well, I was warned to avoid giant mods like Kelsey and Keto and others that add tons of .oggs to the override folder and having them installed all at once.

Now, the issue is whenever I make use of a Fighter, Rogue, or Archer ESeries script, while the script is on, I get slowdown. On every swing of the little pendulum slows occur for half a second where it just freezes... then moves on.

Mysteriously, this vanishes while I'm actively moving my party around. Also, this problem doesn't seem to occur when I use Mages.

I am unsure what the problem is. I tend to install ESeries and Gminion, as well as the mods needed for them; BPDetectableStats, PnP Celestials, later on in the WeiDU Order.

I would like to figure out what is causing this problem, if it is the size of my override folder, some error in ESeries, or possibly my order of install.

My thanks for the ;)

I don't know what to tell you, I very rarely experience slow downs in the game. Usually it is an area with a lot of ambients, a ton of enemies casting spells, and the like.

My only suggestion at this point is to strip down to a clean install and try the eSeries + supporting packages and try it by itself. If you are still experiencing slow downs, then I guess it could be a low end hardware issue (seems doubtful given the date) or it is a problem with the eSeries (if it occurs in all areas).

Thanks,

Thanks for the fast reply, Cirerrek!

At present, I've only tried them in Irenicus' dungeon, so I'll give it a shot.

And, recently, I tried it with a completely fresh install. I didn't get any slowdown.

It might just be the fact that I install so many mods. I usualy go Baldurdash, Ascension, Oversight, Rogue Rebalance, other misc 1 component Minimods, and add in a single romance/npc mod. After that, I go for EoU, Questpack, SimTweaks, Unfinished Business, Tactics, G3 Tweaks, and the bigg's Tweaks.

Usualy in close to that order, then I install the Imp Celestials, BPDetectStates, and then the ESeries and Gminion.

Not sure if I should do it another way or if its just for the near gig and thousands of files all those tweaks and fixes add.

I'll play around and try to figure out what is wrong.

Quick question; Does ESeries require BPDetectableStates anymore? Or does it supply its own? I want to make sure.

Yes, the current version requires BPDetectableStats. Hopefully we'll have a new version of Detectable Stats in the relatively near future. Then I'll recode the eSeries to take advantage of it (in other words, there probably will not be a new version of the eSeries, until the new version of Detectable Stats is out).

Well, I've been investigating, Cirerrek.

I have added all the mods I want to use but G3 Tweaks and the bigg tweaks on my game. ESeries runs without any slowdown right now.

I ran G3 tweaks and installed a good few of the ones I want.

However, trying it again with it installed = Slowdown.

So, one of the tweaks I installed in the G3 Tweakpack is either so large it makes my override folder too large for ESeries, or there is a Tweak that is interacting negatively with the ESeries.

Here is a list of all the G3 Tweaks I've installed.(including Visual Ioun Stones after, but that would cause any trouble...)

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #0 // SoA World Map Fixes

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #3 // Change Magically Created Weapons to Zero Weight

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #6 // Make +x/+y Weapons Consistent

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #37 // Remove Helmet Animations

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #46 // Avatar Morphing Script

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #49 // Weapon Animation Tweaks

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #55 // Restore SoA Load Screen Logo (ToB Only)

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #58 // Disable Portrait Icons Added by Equipped Items

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #61 // Commoners Use Drab Colors

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #64 // Icon Improvements

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #91 // Force All Dialogue to Pause

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #94 // Use Valen/Solaufein Style Interjections

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #97 // Alter HP Triggers for NPC Wounded Dialogues

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #116 // Improved Athkatlan City Guard

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #119 // Druids Use Cleric Level and Spell Progression

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #152 // Sellable Staffs, Clubs, and Slings (Icelus)

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #158 // Rebalanced Weapon Proficiencies

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #180 // Higher HP on Level Up -> Maximum

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #185 // Maximum HP for NPCs (the bigg) -> For Party-Joinable NPCs Only

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #188 // Identify All Items

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #194 // Bottomless Containers

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #197 // Add Ammo Belts and Potion Cases to SoA

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #203 // Remove fatigue from restoration spells

~G3TWEAKS.TP2~ #0 #221 // Improved Fate Spirit Summoning

~SETUP-D0TWEAK.TP2~ #0 #11 // Visual Ioun Stones

Nothing especialy jumps out at me besides the Avatar Morphing Script.

I'll uninstall and try again, and we'll see.

That was me, yes. Hm. I should just register.

I'd be willing to bet a dollar it's the bottomless bags of holding component, and having too much stuff in them. The scripts may potentially be browing through hundreds of items each cycle which would slow things down.

i have the same stutter problem with the eseries. ai on, stutter. ai off, no stutter. this is on any game, new or old. this is with the bg2 fix pack and bg2 tweaks (not g3 tweaks). i doubt its a hardware issue. could someone post an install log that has a working eseries for comparison purposes?

There are so many different things that can cause an in-game stutter that it is very difficult to pinpoint a precise cause.

I've had numerous stutter problems over various installs, and they have all been "caused" by different things. I say "caused" because I suspect that is not a single entity at all, but a combination of contributing factors.

Things that have "caused" stutters in my game:

-cache problems (clearing the cache eliminated the problem)

-gradual drow item disintegration

-attempting to outfit every member of the party with both boots of speed *and* rings of free movement (horrible cheat, I know, but I was doing some testing and didn't want to have to worry about web traps)

-bottomless containers, and too many of them

-having too many simultaneous NPC mods (which is kind of silly since I only really run one mod NPC per game anyway unless they have cross-mod banter)

-forgetting to turn off my computer's scheduled maintenance while I'm playing (OK, so I'm stoopid)

-while running Tutu, I get a stutter sometimes in areas with lots of running water

-running in multi-player mode with another player without first synchronizing our installations (again, not the most intelligent thing I've ever done)

yeah i realize all the probable causes of stutter. never have had problem with stutter before on my mega-install that was't easily remedied. i've had a weapons factory worth of items in my bags of holding and no stutter. this stutter only occurs with the eseries switched on wether or not my bags are empty or full or even if i have any. the eseries doesn't ctd, it just kinda stutters. like nega-druid i think this is a compatibility issue. would'nt really bother so much but i really like the auto buffing rountine (i value every single click i don't have to do). as before, what do the mega installs of people with working eseries look like? anyways trying my 100 or so install of the month for kicks and giggles. we'll so how it goes.

I've never had problems with e series causing slowdown before this current install with v 1.8. I also have divine remix installed for the first time, and for the first time have a (normal, not bottomless) bag of holding in my inventory. Could either of these elements be causing the slowdown, or is it the new version? I had no problems whatsever with version 1.7 :)

Is it possible to get a copy of the previous version to see whether that makes a difference? It's all but unplayable right now and I've had to go to SGSeries which does not have ToB high lvl abilities. :)

Just FYI; I was having little eSeries hiccups (slowdown and freezing really fast) and did just about everything in the book to try and fix it; different install orders, BP-DetectStats getting installed properly and not as a part of other mods, BIFF-ing the override folder, defragmenting, etc.)

What finally fixed it, and what has completely eliminated all extra slowdown I was having with AI enabled, was uninstalling Norton AntiVirus. I didn't have it set to auto-scan or anything, my slowdown was happening all the time. I think something about Norton and all the windows services it has running in the background slowed it down that extra bit.

I was wondering if anyone had managed to resolve this? I have a desktop that's less than a year old, and I just recently did a clean install of the game. When running the eSeries scripts, I tend to get very distinct stuttering every few seconds. When I disable the scripts via the D command, it alleviates the problem only partially. The only way to get things to run perfectly smoothly is to turn off the A.I. completely by hitting A. I haven't had any slowdown with it off, or when using any of the default scripts.
