Infinity Engine Modlist

Recommended Posts

Almost a year ago, I decided to create a comprehensive list of all the mods made for Baldur's Gate 2. As time went by, the list grew and grew, and was eventually complemented by similar lists for Baldur's Gate 1, Icewind Dale, and Icewind Dale 2, as well as lists of all the various modding communities and portrait sites. To say that it took up quite a bit of time is an understatement. All of the lists were posted on numerous sites around the 'net and usenet.

To make things easier for me and more convenient for players everywhere, we at the Pocket Plane Group have setup a centralized database to consolidate all of these various lists. This new setup allows for easier categorization of all the mods, as well as allowing mod authors to submit their own entries.

The database is by no means complete just yet. TeamBG is still down, and a few other sites are inaccessible, but they will be added when and if the situation changes. The database population will be an ongoing project of ours for the next several days, so please bear with us. Feel free to help us out, however, and submit your own links. Please note, however, that only completed/beta mods will be listed.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone individually for making the IE modding community for being one of the most diverse and vibrant groups around. Without you all, my work would all be for naught. :(

So, without further ado, I present to you the Pocket Plane Group Infinity Engine Modlist: http://modlist.pocketplane.net

In case you've not visited the Modlist lately, I highly suggest that you do so soon. :)

The database now has over 600 entries, covering not just every mod out there for all of the IE games, but also portraits, patches, tutorials, FAQs, walkthroughs, communities, fanfic forums, soundsets, tools, and much more.

And, as always, if you spot something that's missing, feel free to submit a link. :)

So does the modlist currently contain all the up-to-date mods for BG-IWD-PST out their?

If so that is pretty cool, the thought of browsing the pocket plane, gibberlings, spellhold, sorcerer's, black wyrm and mystra's sites for compatible and up to date mods was a bit off putting.

We're a little behind on some updates but it tends towards completeness.

Cool, thanks.

BTW, good work on your mods Jcompton. While I may only of joined today, I have been keeping my eyes on and regularly checking the gibberlings and pocketplane sites for a couple of years now. Alot of good work has been put into these mods.

Edit -> Considering how closely related gibberlings and pocketplane are (as well as all the others), how come they have not been combined? If not the sites, then at least the mod locations so that all the databases are complete and up to date?

This has recently been brought up again here.

To summarize:

- People don't always get along, so it's a good idea to have multiple destinations so that everyone can have their say.

- Even when people do generally get along (like, say, CamDawg and me) they can still have different ideas about how things should be done, what kinds of mods are worth encouraging, etc.

- Competition, even when perfectly friendly, is good for the species.

- Every so often a mod site administrator has been known to flip out and nuke his board. It's nice to not have the entire community seize up when that happens, and multiple sites helps preserve that continuity.

Oh, and I don't understand the question about updating the mod locations--can you clarify?

Thanks for the link, pity about teamBG going down I remember hearing that most of the original large mods were done by them, I can understand the creation of another site to accommodate mods that were not accepted by them. I see why multiple sites were created as well, and I understand why they still exist and for good reason.

However I agree with some sentiment on that link you provided that so much more would get done if people would work together *shrug* way life is.

I just don't see why the occasional problem would stop people from at least working together enough to make sure all mods were listed in at least one (preferably two) places and were kept up to date. Sort of like what PPG have done with their mod database.

Edit-> updating mod locations - what I mean is having a database (like the pocket plane IE mod database) which was updated as soon as a mod was released or updated, so even if people worked separately, all the mods could be found in at least one place and more or less guaranteed to be up to date and definitive.

Erm, unless the PPG IE mod database is that, in which case erm, ignore me. I just got the impression that it contained most mods but not all, and not up to date as when I checked the updates on the database it did not include the updates on the gibberlings main page, if you understand what I am saying?

What those sentiments typically miss out on (even though we try to say it all the time) is that plenty of people cooperate "across forum lines."

For instance, to help make up for the fact that some of the "PPG core modders" have wandered off in recent years, people like Jastey and DavidW have helped update and maintain some mods recently. Over time, most of the prolific/accomplished/whatever you want to call them modders have contributed in some way to mods developed/hosted outside their "home" forum. (Sim is credited on a zillion mods. I've lent some time and voicework to non-PPG productions. Kulyok has produced popular mods on both G3 and PPG. Etc.) Although there are arguments, disputes, and disagreements from time to time, the fact is that most modders seem to feel pretty comfortable lending a hand on most forums. The divisions are mostly cosmetic, or represent benign differences of opinion, but are still valuable for the reasons I mentioned.

Like I said, I'm a little bit behind.

As far as keeping existing entries up to date, the modlist actually allows people to establish a username and password when they input their entries so that they can maintain their own listing, although in practice most people do not avail themselves of this option when they submit a link. So then it's up to the free/available time of the modlist maintainers (these days, Kulyok and me) to fix problems as they occur.

Icelus' original PPG list is (and I expect will continue to be) the master list across all english-language communities, with a follow-up initiative now being discussed at SHS [working model found here ]. Each one relies on modders (or the community) to update them, as JCompton mentioned, or like the Tutu State of the Union list asks the community for feedback and then periodically a site maintainer comes through and gathers the information and gets it all set up/digested for users.

Which is something those of us at G3 don't always remember (like when we do updates, we should probably visit both PPG and that IEMI page, and update them - we have been firing out IE News releases, but not updating materials on either site). I'll try to get time this afternoon and see what we should have updated.

@JCompton

Yea, I have noticed that a few people tend to contribute on half the mods I've downloaded : )

Thanks for the info, I have a much greater understanding on the working of the IE modding community now (though considering I set today aside to work on my dissertation write up, this is not a good thing : ).

@cmorgan

Thanks for the info as well, I was looking at once of those links earlier, and bookmarked the SHS mod database.

@Modders

For my part, thanks for the effort you have put into working on BG, I may not have played in a few years now, but I fully intend to play a game of epic proportions across BG-BG2 once I finish university (only a few horrible months to go).

Must remember to make a donation when I have a decent job and not in debt up-to my armpits in student loans.

If you truly wish to make it epic, make it Mega Mod with a M. Download all these especially the .pdf file and read it, load the mods from here(it's in both German and English), and run the .bat installer that comes in the BWP Installpack.

And this is the 'live update' version of the changes etc. you can't find in the .pdf's.

Forum modifiers, time to split the topic, perhaps?

You can try asking in the GemRB forum. You will probably get a better response if you add punctuation to your posts.
