scs insanely slow to install on bgee linux

Recommended Posts

Just in case you don't know that... that's not even on a mega install, that's an install with 10 mods which are not mega mods, I reinstalled them from scratch to check and it takes between 5 and 10 minutes to install everything.

Then the patches from big picture, I had the bad idea to apply them manually and with the crlf conflicts it took more time than what I had planned...

Then installing just the 1 required component needed by everything takes about 1 hour.

And then you can count 1 more hour just for the 1st required component for the ai part.

At this point that's 2 hours lost with nothing for the player, it's just stuff to be able to install options for scs !!!

That's not on a super fast system, it's and athlon64 4 cores with hard disk, but here the difference of installation time compared to "normal" mods is insane. I just wanted to install the basic improvements to ai to balance another mod, but here I am thinking about just dropping scs, too crazy... !

Of which only one will be of use.

By the way, installing more than one will lenghten the SCS installation... but it's not the number that's an issue, it's the what it does and how that is done, that is far more taxing. Install 1000 kits and you won't be seeing the finnish for a long time. Install a quest mod and it could be that it takes just a second longer.

Depending on what you install, SCS can take a loooong time.

My practice: install the 'Initialize' component (doesn't take me an hour, maybe 20-30 minutes, but roughly the same order of magnitude), then whatever small pre-AI options I want. Then the 'Initialize AI' component which takes another ~30 minutes. Finally, I start the 'General AI' component and let it run overnight. (It really takes 2-3 hours, but that's long enough that I'd rather just leave it til the next day.)

Then the next morning, I install the rest of SCS and the handful of post-SCS mods, which usually only take a few minutes.

Thing is, it's worth it. I won't even consider playing these games without SCS.

It's not worth sinking 40-60 hours into playing through the a sub-par version of the games. Not when I could have made it better by spending a bit more time (and being asleep through most of it) setting it up.

But of course YMMV ;)

For info I had to uninstall scs because it helped me from starting a new game (I just wanted to test something on a class, but when starting a new game I arrived directly to the race selection except it was empty, I could return to sex selection using back, but when arriving to race selection it was still empty).

The components installed were :

#1000 #5900 #6000 #6010

which are the ones needed for the 1st improvements to ai.

Too bad !

I can just confirm that "new game" worked again after uninstalling completely this, I didn't try to uninstall the components separately.
