Wisp
The GTU changes well over 11000 strings. The vast majority of these changes are redundant or pointless and only make it more difficult to work with the lot of them. "GTU Light" is derived from the GTU but endeavours to only make meaningful and beneficial changes to the written text of the game. What I have done: I've gone through gtu.tra and looked for strings met these two criteria: -It probably shows up in the game. A string probably shows up in the game if it is referenced by a j-dlg file or something like that. -The change to the string is something I consider worthwhile. Examples of worthwhile are changing presense into presence, Riativin into Riatavin or changing the string to match the voice-over. Examples of not worthwhile are adding a blank space after every instance of ..., changing double-spaces into single-space or changing theatre into theater. If the GTU string contained typos, spurious changes or other GTU flimflam I've generally used the corrected vanilla string instead of copying the GTU string. I've added the reported cases from the Fixpack forums I know of (the three in Nythrun's 6.2 post, the horde->hoard ones Mike posted and Mike's fixed item usability descriptions). I've been slightly adventurous and briefly ventured into the tlk-jungle on my own in search of strings in need of correction. What I haven't done: I've generally not gone over descriptions of different kinds to make sure they are factually correct, consistent etc. There are some fixes like this, however. I've not checked or included string changes advertised as making changes only meaningful to SoA-only games. I've not included Nythrun's long bow description fixes from Nythrun's 6.2 post, since they depend on making changes to the item too. Also, there is a conflict between this fix' way of changing the description and the GTU/GTUL's fix for a typo in Taralash's description. I've not gone too out of my way to look for and fix misspellings like your instead of you're, to instead of too etc. There are probably five million each of these. I have corrected the ones I found while going through the GTU and a few I've noticed on my own. I've not scoured the internet (or even the Fixpack forums) for other reports of bad spelling or grammar. If you know of something that hasn't been included, please speak up. The final product weighs in at just over 1300 strings. The strings are included in a separate tra file. The strings follow the GTU numbering scheme and are set by a separate .tpa file following the GTU convention. Most of these string changes are only relevant to English installations, but there are a few that non-English installations would probably benefit from (like the corrected name and description of Defender of Easthaven). I'll try to pick out the strings that may be relevant to translators without too much delay. A few rules I have used while deciding the correct spelling of names and other non-english (except for canon names and obvious misspellings [things like Imnesvail or Abzigal]): "Rivvin" is drow-talk for "humans" while "rivvil" is drow-talk for "human". The family name is Roenall (64 instances), not Roenal (27 instances). Haer'Dalis is spelled with a capital D (75 instances without capital D and 121 with capital D). The paladin order is the "Most Noble Order of the Radiant Heart" or the "Order of the Radiant Heart", not the "Noble Order of the Most Radiant Heart" or any other variation thereof. (Except for Anomen, who did not get the memo in time for his recording session.) Yaga-Shura is spelled with a hyphen (46 instances without hyphen and 70 with hyphen). It's the Vampiricus Omnibus (4 instances), not the Vapiricus Omnibus (5 instances). The city is called Faenya-Dail (9 instances), not Faenya-Dael (3 instances). It is also spelled with a capital D (3 instances without capital D and 6 with capital D). Whose plate is it? It's T'rachie's plate. His name is Glaicus (10 instances), not Glaicas (2 instances). The family name is de'Arnise and it is spelled with a lower case d (107 instances with lower case d and 6 instances with capital D). The house is called DeVir (6 instances), not De Vir (4 instances). It's the Scepter of Radiance. I won't post the entire list of what is being changed. This is detailed in the .tpa file. GTU Light has some strings that differ from the GTU string of the same number or are not included in the GTU. I tried to keep track of them, but once the number rose past one hundred, I dropped the ball. If this ends up as a GTU subcomponent (as I imagine it eventually will), it's probably not relevant how the GTU and GTUL differ. But if someone's interested, I can probably come up with some numbers (I have a partial list at the moment). TPA file. The tpa file explains what is changed in each string in excruciating detail. TRA file. I hope I haven't forgotten anything, but after having worked on this nightmarish project for something close to 6 months I think I need to post this, if only to overcome the surreal feeling that it can't possibly be finished. That would be fine, because we have an own German textpatch for BG2 and ToB and can benefit of your corrections. By the way, we know, how much work this all is. MK who did the German textpatch in the past worked more then 1 year at it. Since then we update the German textpatch time by time. Greetings Leomar Link to comment

Hopefully for v10 we can take GTUBloated for a final voyage to out behind the shed. It no longer has even a tenuous reason to exist. Link to comment

Guest Roboghost
However: two things the bug me to death (the GTU fixes one of them, but not the light): 1. THACO should be THAC0 2. STATISTICS should be STATISTICS: I use the GTU light plus DLTCEP to find/replace these -- for STATISTICS you need to do it 2x - first find/replace STATISTICS with STATISTICS: and then find/replace STATISTICS:: with STATISTICS: Link to comment

This should maybe be all the strings that make factual corrections or correct names or non-English (e.g. drow-talk). In case it's less than obvious, the format for most of the comments is either //"<wrong>"->"<right>" or simply //"<wrong>". Sometimes it's simply what's changed. 7 @1000007 //Haer'Dalis with capital D 41 @1000041 //Haer'dalis 84 @1000084 //Haer' Dalis 93 @1000093 //Haer' Dalis 96 @1000096 //Haer' Dalis 109 @1000109 //Haer' Igneous
I've got some strings to submit. They contain corrections to typographical errors and discrepant voice-overs that I've noticed both over the course of my current GTU Light-enhanced play-through, and from frolicking through various dialogue files in Near Infinity. I've made an earnest attempt to make only meaningful corrections, in the spirit of GTU Light. However, I've also taken the impudent liberty of removing redundant spaces at the beginnings of sentences and after full stops in affected strings. There are no strings overlapping with GTU Light's modifications, at this point. I'll post here what strings I find in more manageable, bite-sized chunks, in case anyone wants to double-check them. gtul.tpa 2639 @1002639 // "You don't talk much, do you." -> "You don't talk much, do you?" 6273 @1006273 // "Don't worry, I still do it." -> "Don't worry, I'll still do it." 6472 @1006472 // "You honor shall forever remain" -> "Your honor shall forever remain" 7642 @1007642 // "We are heading your home right now." -> "We are heading to your home right now." 7776 @1007776 // "my sisters remains" -> "my sister's remains" 7777 @1007777 // "your are naught but a hindrance." -> "you are naught but a hindrance." 7870 @1007870 // "I am honor-bound to to find my sister's killer" -> "I am honor-bound to find my sister's killer" 8242 @1008242 // "startling affect" -> "startling effect" 8702 @1008702 // Matching VO. devSin
Most of the changes look good, but for GTU Light, we probably won't be changing the spacing (not even for #9009, sigh). #19435, #20053, and #56473 are also not suitable for the light update. Thanks greatly for all the work. And these can be rolled as-is into the full GTU of course. Link to comment

devSin
Not unless there's some fundamental difference, no. I probably wouldn't put in #8702 either, and the only "light" change for #9009 is from "it's bleeding" to "it hurts." You can install the full GTU if you want string modifications that attempt to more closely match the written lines and voiceover. Link to comment
Dakk
From what I've understood the full GTU is severely bloated, and GTU Light is .. well.. lighter Exactly what is "better" with Light though, out of curiosity? Link to comment
Wisp
Thank you for your contribution, Igneous If there are other people working on this I probably shouldn't be hogging my additions (currently focusing on item, spell and interface text, so no overlap with Igneous' strings). Just give me a day or two to slap it into shape. #20053, and #56473 are also not suitable for the light update. I disagree. If the change involves a whole, clearly pronounced, proper word I think it should go in. Otherwise it just devolves into subjective definitions of what is and what isn't different enough. Either that or no VO-matching at all (but I personally think that's emaciated rather than light). From what I've understood the full GTU is severely bloated, and GTU Light is .. well.. lighter Exactly what is "better" with Light though, out of curiosity? Better would be a matter of opinion. Apparently there actually are some people who like the GTU. The GTU basically does everything and anything and for every actually beneficial change there are 10 or more changes that I would rate as junk without hesitation. One of the goals of the GTUL is to only correct spelling errors and grammatical errors. I've also included some rewritten sentences when the original sentence was nonsensical. But revising Bioware's creative approach to English isn't really within the scope of the GTUL, because you'd end up changing half the text in the game. Link to comment

Does this existence of "junk" affect the game in any way (cf. obsessive cleaning of the override, which DavidW eschews)? Or do you mean junk, as in changes for the worse? Link to comment
devSin
I disagree. It's your component, so the decisions is ultimately yours. Thanks for continuing to work away at it! :-) Link to comment
