Hello everyone...i'm trying to install the widescreen Mod for BG1...the installation process it's ok, but everytime i try to launch the game i get this error:

"An assertion failed in D:\Dev\chitin\ChDimm.cpp at line number 581

Programmer says: Unable to Open BIF:DATA\SFXSOUND.BIF"

obviously i have no idea what does it mean.

I own the GOG edition of the D&D Anthology, with a clean installation. I've searched everywhere but i've found no solution. I'm running the game on Windows Vista. Any idea?

The likely option is that you have not installed the whole game... or that you installed the game to a Operation System protected folder, like the C drives Program Files sub-folder, and the game cannot be played using that. Well, unless you go and fix the protection to not to mirror your game folder.

So use the custom install with all the files selected, and direct it to here: C:\Games\Baldur's Gate\ , also then when you are about to install the Widescreen mod, you need to make sure that you start the game and proceed until it quick saves the first game(it does this just after the character is created) before you install any of the mods. And at that time, you can also eliminate a few minor bugs coming from the settings. Noting if the fog of war works correctly etc.

Ok, now things are getting really weird...

the game was installed exactly as you described, but i didn't launch and i hadn't the quick save, so i tried installing the mod after this...

the game itself starts, but the windows are smaller and displayed in the upper left corner, and there are plenty of graphic bugs (the main menù is green/gray-striped, the test is black, ecc.)...moreover, quitting to windows lead me to this error:

"An assertion failed in D:\dev\baldur\chUI.cpp at line number 773"

i made another attempt installing the nvidia fix, but in vain...

Don't know about the error, if there's a problem of the wrong sprite mirroring that you might run into, and in that case you'll see the fog of war being cut to wrongly especially on the right-and down corner as it's not correctly placed, in that case, you just need to adjust that in the games settings by opening the baldur.ini in the game folder with Notepad and Editing the "Sprite Mirror=0" ... line to have a 1 instead of the zero. Or the reverse.

To fix the everything in the upper left corner, you need a GUI mod to make it more even if so it's not all in corner... the GUI mod has a set of resolutions it supports and the forum is generally in Polish, but you can read from there that they understand English... this is what you have to live with the original BG1, you can actually play the game in BG2's engine if you use the EasyTutu or BGT-weidu, but they need the BG2 game to utilize the data.

Did you go into the actual game ? Cause only the main window where you move the characters is fully utilized in the BG1 game, the black borders and so on are the result of the lack of GUI art in those sections, the Widescreen mod only extends the GUI in BG2 (and I would remember that covers the IWD2 too), the rest of the games require their own variation of the GUI mod, that's always installed on top of the Widescreen mod, in BG2, the GUI mod needs to be installed before the Widescreen mod for reasons that break the GUI...

First of all, thank you for the answer and the patience :)

i'm downloading the GUI mod...i've not launched the game, i'll try, maybe after installing this mod...

speaking of wich, this morning i smashed my head trying to install exactly BGT-weidu, but for some reason i failed...even following precisely every step, i've gotten an odd error...this is the debug file, just in case...

(i don't know if there is a way to attach the file directly to this post)

The installation stops because of... I honestly don't know what that is, probably though it's that non valid installation. The things that it needs is a full and clean installation of the BG1 AND TotSC add on pack, and a full installation of the BGII - SoA AND the ToB Addon, the D&D Anthology might have either of the addons on a different disk, and all of it is needed to be installed. Also, the mod require the latest patches to the game, and the Antology pack should have that but I am not entirely sure, so for BG1 it's the v5512 patch, and the BG2 needs the v26498 patch... I am not entirely sure if the patches need to be the language specific ones, or will the English one do, but the BG1 patches can be found here, and the BG2 can be found here, the pages are from the wayback machine because the Bioware doesn't have them anymore, I checked a few of the links and most if not all them actually work as intended.

EDIT:

User answer: "HP(C:)/Giochi/DnMC/Baldurs Gate"
Erhm, this needs to be: C:\Giochi\DnMC\Baldurs Gate\ ... so you might want to try again with that answer.

Here i come with a few updates! Eventually i managed to patch succesfully BG with WS mod :) i had to reinstall the game AND the mod, but it worked...Why? I have no idea O.o but now it's fine...afterwards i had installed even the GUI mod...i locked the res to 1280 x 800 and now everything works properly! The only scary thing was one freeze and black screen during an attempt to launch the game that force me to reset, but this happend just once, so...

I'm pretty sure the anthology is fully updated to the latest version! (I use the Gog version, so i have no disk)

Oops! I'm so silly xD but now that i've managed to patch the game with ws mod i don't know if i have the moral strenght to wipe everything out e retry with BGT... (because i think that a "clean" installation surely isn't going to include Widescreen and GUI mod...) after all, my purpose was to enhance that horrible resolution, even if BGT is really appealing...maybe i'll try it in the near future...

in any case, thank you again :)
