In v2, should my Swashbuckler be able to put 2* in short bow?

I know this was possible in v1, and it still should be according to the readme, but I can't do it in my game. I also can't put 2* in crossbow or sling. Here's my WeiDU log:

// Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods

I'd previously had Level 1 NPCs Beta 7 installed after S&S, because I wanted to see if S&S 'Changes to trueclass bards and thieves, and unmodded game kits' still worked okay with L1NPCs. I was wondering about this because L1NPCs has a 'Tweak the weapon proficiency rules' option. I imagined that L1NPCs would simply follow the rules that S&S set, provided I didn't install a conflicting component.

Anyway, I noticed in the L1NPCs install menu that I couldn't put 2* in short bow for swashbuckler Imoen, which according to the 'Changes to trueclass bards and thieves, and unmodded game kits' component of S&S, I should be able to do.

I then loaded BG2 and created a new swashbuckler, but found that I couldn't put 2* in short bow for him either. Plus the description for the swashbuckler says that he can specialise in any melee weapon that a thief can use. I uninstalled L1NPCs and S&S, reinstalled S&S but still have the same problem.

Also, and I don't know if this is due to S&S, L1NPCs or what, but I had a rather odd thief skill points distribution during character creation:

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/9374/baldr000dj3.jpg

This seems to happen randomly. Out of about 10 times of shutting down the game, loading it and beginning the character creation process, I got this twice. The other time I got it the points were 5, 5, -5, -5.

Edit: Just got it again, this time 5, -5, -5, 0.

Further Edit: And I've now discovered that I can't put 3* in dual wielding with a non-swashbuckler.

Another Edit: I uninstalled S&S and reinstalled L1NPCs, and I'm getting the weird skill points issue again. Maybe it's just that my install of BG2 is borked.

A dollar gets you ten that the BG2 fix pack changed it...and, if it doesn't, it probably should. If I remember correctly, the swashbuckler kit is only supposed to allow thieves to specialize in melee weaponry.

And, Bursk, I'm sorry to say it, but your install does sound pretty borked.

Thanks for the response, Drew. S&S should change things so that the swashbuckler can put 2* in short bow plus a couple of other ranged weapons. Anyway, this is turning out to not be my main concern...

Regarding the negative thief skills points, I've completely uninstalled the game, deleted the game folder (so there's nothing left over) and done the following reinstall:

BG2

ToB

Patch v26498

And you know what? I'm still occasionally getting the negative thief skill points during the 'Skills' character generation stage. What I have discovered is that if I go back a step to 'Abilities' and then forward again to 'Skills' the negative thief skill points usually disappear. If I keep going back and forth between the two sections, the negative thief skills points will come back eventually. I've encountered this with the vanilla thief and the three thief kits.

I haven't played the game in ages, but I cannot ever recall encountering this before, and the frequency with which it's appearing now makes me think that I would've noticed this if it'd come up previously. But this is on a base install, with no other mods. Perhaps this is a known issue, one that the BG2 Fixpack doesn't fix.

I'll send Cam a PM and see if he suggests reposting this somewhere else.

Right, thanks to Nythrun gently pointing out that I'm a spaz, I've discovered that the negative skill points issue is due to a low DEX. Also, she's checked the .tp2 for me and it does seem that Swashbucklers should only be able to put 1* in short bows, crossbows, and slings.

So that this topic isn't a complete waste of everyone's time, I have found a few things that I don't think are correct (although I certainly wouldn't put money on me being right).

Ignoring the LEVEL1NPCS bit (since I did my testing prior to installing that) I've discovered the following:

The Sharpshooter kit allows you to attain Grand Mastery in any missile weapon a Thief can use (the in-game kit description also says this) but the readme still says 'Can attain Mastery in any missile weapon a Thief can use'. This was how it was in v1, so I'm guessing someone forgot to update the readme.

I've also found that I'm unable to put 3* in Two Weapon Fighting Style for the Thief, Assassin, and Bounty Hunter. I also tried a Mage/Thief multiclass, but for that too I could only put 1* in Two Weapon Fighting Style.

I've installed the Burglar and Sharpshooter kits, and I'm able to put 3* in Two Weapon Fighting Style for both of these, as well as the Swashbuckler (which you'd expect).

If I then install Level 1 NPCs and choose the 'Allow thieves and thief multi-classes three stars in dual-wielding' component, I'm able to put 3* in Two Weapon Fighting Style for all the thief kits, plus the Mage/Thief.

It's possible (likely?) that this is just another case of me being dull, but I'd appreciate it if someone could check out S&S v2 for me to see if they too have problems putting 3* in Two Weapon Fighting Style for the Thief, Assassin, and Bounty Hunter.

Aw, that's very kind of you.

The reason I try to be thorough is because I feel it's the least I can do for the people who've made one of my favourite games even better. Actually, it's probably all I can do. I've given Sim and Andyr the offer of sound financial advice should they ever need it (it's what I do for a living) and Nythrun will get the mother of all foot rubs if she ever visits South Wales, but beyond that all I can do is test mods and offer feedback.

Oh, I've just noticed a mistake in the last paragraph of my opening post: I meant to put 'I'd appreciate it if someone could check out S&S v2 for me to see if they too have problems putting 3* in Two Weapon Fighting Style for the Thief, Assassin, Bounty Hunter, and Mage/Thief.' (I left the Mage/Thief part out).

Edit - I'd made some notes on the Sharpshooter, just minor things, but forgot to post them. So:

The description for the Sharpshooter says 'well - versed' and 'well - aimed', but it should be 'well-versed' and 'well-aimed' to maintain consistency with the rest of the text in the game.

Also, I'm not sure I like the Sharpshooter's ability to coat his missile weapon in poison. This seems to give the kit an evil slant. A search of the board shows that this has been discussed before, but no changes were ever made, despite an apparent willingness by Andyr.

That's everything for now.

The weapprof.2da patch in Song and Silence is actually pretty screwed up - it's off by a row consistently and the columns don't all match up (notably, swashbucklers are not being fixed and clerics are getting three stars in single weapon style.

Suggest changing patch to

COPY_EXISTING weapprof.2da override
 COUNT_2DA_COLS cols
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 31 7 ~3~ //Thief
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 31 39 ~3~ //Assassin
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 31 40 ~3~ //Bounty hunter
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 31 41 ~3~ //Swashbuckler
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 13 41 ~2~ //Swashbucklers, katanas
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 23 41 ~1~ //Swashbucklers, crossbows
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 25 41 ~1~ //Swashbucklers, short bows
 SET_2DA_ENTRY_LATER weapprof 27 41 ~1~ //Swashbucklers, slings
 SET_2DA_ENTRIES_NOW weapprof cols
 PRETTY_PRINT_2DA

as the patch is obligatory.

Heh, I should probably clarify that this is the source of Bursk's strangeness in earlier versions - I imagine it's been corrected for V2 :help:

No, it's not :)

Nythrun, I'm positive that there were none of these problems in v1 of the mod. Do you suggest avoiding the mod for the time being?

Edit: But then again I'm far too tired to be thinking and must go to bed. Anyway, thanks for taking a look at this.

Miloch, I don't know if your response means that you are involved with the update, but one thing I do think needs to be checked is the Sharpshooter description in the online readme, which says:

Can attain Mastery in any missile weapon a Thief can use

It's been a while since I installed the mod, but I seem to recall that the Sharpshooter can attain grand-mastery/grandmastery/Grand Mastery/grand mastery/Grandmastery/Grand-Mastery.

I think it's just that the readme still has the v1 details, and needs to be updated. Unless things have changed recently, I believe that only Cam has the powar to change readmes on the site.

Can you double-check to make sure? I don't want to say something true should be changed to something false...

Possibly, but I'll mention it to cmorgan. There are other typos that need to be fixed - constructions like "well-versed" and "well-aimed" should not have spaces around the hyphens, one should not refer to a singular sharpshooter as "they," etc.
