Someone please help me understand GLOBALS!

Greetings, fair travelers!

I've been looking through various websites for days trying to figure out exactly how global variables work in SoA and ToB. More specifically, I'm trying to set the Tsujatha romance to be my active romance, and at the same time, disable the Solaufein/Anomen romances.

Anomen I found a simple solution for: do his quest then kick him out of the party, he annoys the crap outta me anyway.

But Solaufein is a fun NPC to have, since he banters a lot and he is a rather pleasant travelling companion. Whatever the reason, I like him, and I have done his romance mod before, now I want to try an exclusive romance with Tsujatha, just for something different. But I can't stop Sola from hitting on my PC. He keeps going into "lovetalk" mode and I can't make him stop, even when I told him I "just want to be friends". During the hell trials, it's Sola who is taken away and held, not Tsu. Also, Bodhi kidnaps Sola, not Tsu. It's mind-boggling, really.

GETTING TO THE POINT.....

Can someone please explain exactly what the global values mean? From what I have been able to figure out, it sorta means this:

1 = yes

2 = absolute (not sure what that means, but ok...)

3 = no

I'd appreciate anyone being able to help me in this. Thanks a mill!

I am glad you enjoy Tsujatha! :D

The difficulty with the romance globals is that it is Sola we are talking about. His romance was designed to not interfere with other romances, so in practice, his romance wins out over any other.

Actually, you could have kept Anomen in your party. Tsujatha's mod is coded to force you to choose between them, and Anomen's romance global would have been set to 3 after that.

This is the breakdown of romance globals:

RomanceActive=1 is the flirting stage; 2 is committed romance; 3 is screwed romance.

It is likely that you are at RomanceActive=2 with Tsujatha. (Has he told you he loves you? That is the clinching talk. Also, in Tsujatha's ReadMe it does warn you that progressing too far with Sola will screw Tsujatha's romance without warning.) The trouble is that even when you are NOT romancing Sola, he still participates in many otherwise "romance only" things. I am not sure about the Hell Trials; I tend to think that is random. The Bodhi-napping thing can be awkward. The only way I have found to avoid Bodhi kidnapping Sola is to kick him out of the party before going to the graveyard. Then I pick him back up before I go fight Bodhi. Not the most elegant solution, but it works.

At least in ToB you should not have the problems so much. Sola never had that much to do ToB. Just watch out for the Eclipse! Tsujatha's romance should continue just fine.

If you have any more questions, just ask!

The character chosen to be the target of your decisions in the Hell trials isn't random. It is whoever is in Party Slot 1, otherwise known as Player2. This has nothing to do with your visible party order. The only way to change the order of the party slot assignments is by kicking characters out and letting them rejoin. I'll illustrate.

The main character is ALWAYS Player1, in party slot 0 (zero). The second character to join the party becomes Player2 and is assigned to party slot 1. And so on. So let's say I start a game and pick up Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc and Yoshimo in that order. For illustration, I'll keep the party small.

Charname - Player 1 - party slot 0

Imoen - Player 2 - party slot 1

Jaheira - Player 3 - party slot 2

Minsc - Player 4 - party slot 3

Yoshimo - Player 5 - party slot 4

Even if I drag portrait icons to place Minsc in front of Jaheira and place Imoen where Minsc currently is, this internal order, the order in which they joined the party, doesn't change.

Okay, we leave Jon's home and Imoen gets hauled away. That leaves an empty slot so everyone that was behind her moves up. (Anytime someone leaves an empty slot, if there's anyone behind them, they move up to occupy that slot.)

Charname - Player 1

Jaheira - Player 2

Minsc - Player 3

Yoshimo - Player 4

Jaheira ends up leaving for Harper stuff but comes back later. Yoshimo leaves just before we pick up Imoen. Minsc never leaves the party. By the time we reach Hell, things look like this:

Charname - Player 1

Minsc - Player 2

Jaheira - Player 3

Imoen - Player 4

Since Minsc is Player2, he'll be the one taken for the Selfish test. (If you're soloing, a generic NPC is summoned to be the target for the test.)

So there are two party orders the game keeps track of.

1. Your specified party order, as seen on screen.

2. The order in which the characters joined the party. (internal, not seen on screen)

I know what you mean about cancelling romances. Death, prolonged time away from the party, or outright rudeness seem to be the only ways to prevent a romance in Bioware's characters, and some mods. Not realistic.

Romance value 1 should indicate friendship. That carries a lot more meaning than superficial flirting. Yasraena uses this value for friendship, a welcome change from the usual trend. Romance value 2 does mean committed, but Bioware let you kill the romance at any time through uncalled-for rudeness. (I think a manic-depressive/bipolar/mentally diseased person coded their dialogs.) Romance value 3 kills everything. No more friendship, no more romance. It gets very quiet (ala Icewind Dale) when this value is set.

Agreed. In my game it was Minsc who was taken away for the selfish test, because he was the only member of my party who had been with me from beginning to end. And I get what you mean about "internal" party order, as this is what shows when you save/load games.

ROFLMAO! Yes, sadly this is why I never really enjoyed IWD as much as BG2. In fact, Tales of the Sword Coast had a nice story arc, but it was definitely missing the banters and inevitable romances which really made SoA come alive for me.

I definitely agree about the friendship option. I hate having to be rude to my party members (unless I'm playing an evil character) just so that Anomen or Jaheira stop giving me The Eye. I suppose this is also the reason I have never, EVER finished the game with Jaheira or Aerie in my party. Ever. I just couldn't take it! :D

I wish I could find someone willing to collaborate with me on creating some BG2 mods. I guess I have to take a crash test in VB :)

I am glad you liked the Yasraena mod. :D I was involved in making that as well as Tsujatha. :)

I see about the Player2 thing. I wondered why it was that Anomen got taken so often.

Now about working on mods, Kai, what was it you had in mind? If you are just looking to get involved in the modding scene, there are several enormous mod projects which are probably looking for people to join up. (BG1NPC project perhaps, here on this very forum! Or maybe The Dark Elves over at CoM.) If you were interested in joining those teams, you might try PMing the team leaders. If, on the other hand, you have an idea of your own for a mod, by far the best thing is to learn to code yourself. I am more than willing to help answer any questions I can, and there are lots of helpful people on the forums!

Good luck with modding! :D I look forward to seeing your work!
