Problems installing on Linux

Torgo

Recommended Posts

I downloaded BG2 from GOG and extracted the files to my ~/Downloads directory. I also downloaded the bg2fixpack and extracted it to the game directory (~/Downloads/Baldurs Gate 2/prefix/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/) along with the WeiDU bin/amd64 files. So the game directory contains the bg2fixpack directory as well as the tolower, weidu and weinstall executables.

I ran tolower in the directory and answered Y to both questions. But now when I try to run the command:

./weinstall bg2fixpack/

It just says:

Killed

I tried running the command with sudo but that doesn't seem to do anything at all.

I also tried moving the tolower, weidu and weinstall exe's to /usr/bin like the instructions recommend but no difference there.

Edit: Figured it out. I needed to copy the exe's from bin/i386 to /usr/bin. And yes they have to be in /usr/bin or the script can't find em. How do I delete this thread?

This goes on for like 1000 lines. Here's my linux.ini:

I moved the game files out of ~/Downloads and into that directory, but it still can't find them for some reason.

I noticed the casing is different, which surprised me because I thought tolower was supposed to lowercase everything. Is that the problem?

tolower from 237 doesn't work recursively (if you run it in the "Baldur's Gate 2" directory, the files in data/ will not be lowercased).

I also have a problem with 64bit version of weinstall (it segfaults on my box) but others don't have this problem.

I have mentioned the bugs in the weidu forum and wisp is looking at it. Can you temporarily use 236 version of weidu and see if your problems persist ?

You're right - it must be a problem with 237. tolower from 236 does work recursively, and the installer ran without any errors this time. Thanks!

I have another question: where do I extract the archive from GOG to?

When I ran tolower it created linux.ini with:

CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/
CD1:=/home/rmorton/.wine/drive_c/GOG Games/Baldur's Gate 2/data/

I assumed in order for bg2fixpack to work these paths needed to be correct, so I moved the GOG Games folder from the archive to this directory, leaving everything else in my ~/.wine directory the way it was. But I also need start.sh from the archive to run the game, which relies on support/gog_com.shlib and presumably a bunch of other stuff. This is how the archive from GOG is structured:

Baldurs Gate 2/
    docs/
    prefix/
        dosdevices/
        drive_c/
            GOG Games/
                Baldur's Gate 2/
    support/
        gog_com.shlib
    wine_standalone/
    start.sh

I already have a Wine installation, so I don't think I need wine_standalone. My ~/.wine directory already contains a devices folder, so I don't think I need that either. The stuff in docs isn't really necessary, though I'd like to have it somewhere near the game files just in case.

Where do I put this stuff so I can install bg2fixpack? Can I put it anywhere as long as the paths in linux.ini are correct?

I am not sure i understood. You downloaded a linux version from GOG which essentially is a .wine installation directory and you want to move the "Baldur's Gate 2" directory to your existing .wine directory ?

If yes, unless the GOG version needs some registry keys (which are stored in user.ini) which i doubt, you can copy the Baldur's Gate 2 directory (the one under GOG Games that contains the actual game) anywhere in your .wine installation under the drive_c directory and re-run tolower to update linux.ini (i don't know if that is even needed as i don't have a linux.ini and everything works fine)

All mod files will need to be extracted in the game directory.

My installation has the following structure (old version not GOG)

As you see, all mod directories and .tp2 files are found in the game directory. Afterwards, you run "weinstall name_of_tp2" (for example "weinstall bg2fixpack" or "weinstall itemupgrade").

You've got the gist of it. The problem with extracting `Baldurs Gate 2/prefix/drive_c/Baldur's Gate 2` to `~/.wine/drive_c` is I'm not sure how to start the game. The archive includes a script to launch Wine, but it is in the root folder inside the archive (at Baldurs Gate 2/start.sh) and it depends on files also in the root folder (in Baldurs Gate 2/support).

Eventually I just extracted the whole directory to `~/Games/Baldurs Gate 2` so I guess now I have two versions of Wine. But I was able to install the fixpack and everything works (except widescreen - will post in the other forum about that).
