Pillars of Eternity Modding Capability

I'm looking forward to Pillars of Eternity (coming in March?). Might work on modding this one if it turns out good. Another reason I dont feel like learning to mod bg2 just yet. We'll see :)

AFAIK, PoE will run on Unity, and it isn't very moddable (well, unless hex-editing a 2Gb archive of compressed data sound like the game being moddable...), unless they make an editor like InXile for Torment: Tides of Numenara.

ah its so sad, i just made a quick look and it does seem that they arent planning much room for modding at release :( . We'll see how it turns out, I dont think its a huge deal at release but for longevity it is.

Srsly. Not for nothing BG2 and Oblivion still constitute the majority of my gaming, all these years later.

I understand if you want to do a more casual point & click game like Diablo or Bastion, then sure who cares about mods. But if you're developing an in-depth RPG and literally advertising it as something to appeal to BG players, how do you not embrace modding wholeheartedly?

My thing is I love Obsidian to death, but I worry about the lack of mod support they've talked about with PoE simply because you just know that game is going to ship as a buggy mess. The more I watch about PoE, the more I think Pools: Myth Drannor and less BG series. I actually liked Pools, but I'm thinking Sword Coast Legends might be the BG "2.5" we've all been waiting for.

A third party can also do this, look at Near Infinity.

Or what was that game that didn't have a PC multiplayer until a modder added back in n a mod. Ahh... Resident Evil Revelation 2(Episode 1).

I don't think NI will help much on trying to uncover another game. I'd rather pick a Hex editor and use it on it's data (starting with IF I get the game, I like and have enough time to play through it and start modding...).

I wasn't specifically talking about NI, I said look at it, not with it. See if NI can do that to Infinity Engine games, I am sure some other hex editor program can be developed do it to PoE game, yes, NI is GUI driven hex editor.

You have heard the claim that the mod tools today are better than the tools the BG developers had for their own game, right ?

Sorry for the of topic'ing.

I'm not saying it won't happen... I'm just saying that it won't be easy to start :)

During their Pax East presentation yesterday, someone asked them whether the game would have mod support. The lead programmer gave a "yes, but toolkits / editors will probably come post-release" response to it.

The question is around the 42 minute mark.

Nice, good to hear. Not only does good mod support improve the longevity of the game over time, as people have already said, but it also makes it a lot easier for them to update and add new content to it themselves. If they plan on making an expansion at all, they would probably release modding tools.

There has already been a decent amount of modding done on the Backer Beta and yes, while Unity modding generally requires a degree of C# coding ability the PoE files have been left open to as much a degree as possible by the developers to help modders get started.

The IE mod is a collection of changes currently modded on the PoE Backer Beta to change things the mod creator thinks don't work or make it more like some of the IE games. Just reading through the webpage of the mod can give you an idea of what is already possible.

Mmm, that seems pretty neat. If the game's too good I might get into modding it (OK... I should start saying "if I ever buy it and then play it", LOL), but I don't think I'll learn C# to mod it's Unity side, at least until I learn how to mod the game by easier methods/not so complex tasks.
