Horace Blackthorne

Age: 36

History: Horace Blackthorne is the eldest son of Randall Firecamâ€â€black sheep of the noble Firecam familyâ€â€and Marissa Blackthrone, the former dockside prostitute who became his wife. Randall enjoys the distinction of being one of the few successful criminals able to operate without the patronage of the Shadow Thieves, and he has placed the hopes of his small criminal empire in his son. Like his father, Horace prefers to operate on the boundaries of legality, and is often involved in minor felonies such as black-marketeering and forgery. In his better moments he thinks of himself as a benefactor, providing citizens a shortcut through the snarls of Amnian bureaucracy. Nonetheless, he is a studied cutthroat.

Recently he was sought out by Angelo Dosan, a marked fugitive from Baldur’s Gate claiming to want a “new life†in Amn.

Asgursz Moran

Age: 28

History: This half-orc fighter is one of a score of amateur bounty hunters operating in-between Baldur’s Gate and Amn. Through sheer toughness he has acquired a reputation, but his skills have yet to be tested against a major quarry.

The Brothers Blackwater: Lucius, Marcus, Mencius and Caius

Ages (in order): 31, 30, 25, 21

History: The sons of a Beregost farmer who lost his livelihood one bitter winter, the brothers Blackwater tried a career in the Amnian army, only to realize that “freelance†work paid twice as well and had the advantage of letting you kill anyone you pleased. They share a remarkable physical resemblance and are entirely without scruples. Lucius, the eldest, taught his brothers spellcraft, but his skill is by far the greatest.

Desmond Merzer

Age: 34

Height: 5’ 11â€Â

Hair Color: Black

Eye color: Blue

Fighter, level 10

Lawful Good

STR: 17

DEX: 10

CON: 16

INT: 10

WIS: 9

CHA: 13

History: It is said that there are two kinds of officers in the Flaming Fist mercenary police forceâ€â€those who are in it for the money and those who have principles. Merzer, after his hero Scar, is emphatically one of the latter. He lacked the temperance and dedication necessary to become a Paladin of Torm, but is still a devoted worshipper of the Paladin’s god, and has dedicated his life to protecting the citizens of Baldur’s Gate.

Merzer was an up-and-coming officer in the Fist during what has become known as the Sarevok Affair, in which Captain Scar was murdered, and his place taken (under dubious circumstances) by the freelance operative Angelo Dosan. Merzer believed Angelo a good man who would uncover the truth behind Scar’s murder. In fact, after managing to get the normally temperate Captain drunk one night, Angelo himself had committed the murder.

Merzer has now risen to the station formerly occupied by Scar and Angelo. He has little taste for the Fist’s practice of contracting its work to common bounty hunters, but his desire for vengeance has proved greater than his scruples. Hearing that Angelo managed to elude several operatives, he has struck out for Athkatla.

Combat: Merzer is an accomplished swordfighter, and he has armed himself with the most powerful magical items at the Fist’s disposal. With his great strength and fortitude and his preference for heavy armor, his favored tactic is to wear his opponents down before delivering the fatal blow.

Amato Sawara

Age: 18

Height: 5’ 6â€Â

Hair color: White

Eye color: Golden-brown

Onmyou-do Sorcerer, level 16

Lawful Evil

STR: 9

DEX: 14

CON: 12

INT: 14

WIS: 9

CHA: 20

History: Amato Sawara is named after his “birthplace,†Amato hill in the Sawara province of Kozakura. There he was found by a member of the Black Lizard criminal clan, enjoying a tryst in the woods with his mistress. Failing the efficacy of contraceptive herbs, infanticide is an allowed practice in Kozakuran society (although priests of the Way decry it); and most likely Sawara’s mother was a prostitute who had left the unwanted child to perish. However, Amato hill is also reputedly home to a powerful fox spirit, and the criminal who found him assumed he was the child of spirits. Hoping to harness this power for the Black Lizard clan, he raised the child as his own.

From a young age, Sawara indeed showed a magical aptitude. As in the West, this sort of innate talent is ascribed to divine or draconic blood, and Sawara grew to believe himself a chosen of the “eight million gods†of Kozakura. Whether true or false, this belief was only fueled when a street fortune-teller informed him that he was one of countless bastard sons of the Emperor of the Jade Throne himself.

Sawara quickly grew dissatisfied with his role as assassin. Conspiring with Suu, a fellow assassin who, like him, had been raised by the clan from birth, he overthrew the clan council and declared himself Grandmaster. However, rather than staying to cement his power, he took off after a report that a powerful relic of Kozakura had fallen into the hands of Amnians.

With this relic, a sword once wielded by one of Kozakura’s mythic heroes, he hopes to give legitimacy to a bid for the throne itself. His power in undeniable, but some may question whether it has not far outstripped the young man’s judgment.

Sawara is eerily handsome and claims to be able to charm people by looking into their eyes. One may question whether his power is in fact his own, or if he himself has been “charmed†by a malicious spirit.

Combat: Using incantations and paper amulets, Sawara is able to cast spells with a speed equaled by few Western mages (which his in-game casting of Time Stop is meant to represent). He prefers indirect tactics such as magical coercion, but if his life is threatened, he will abandon subtlety and repeatedly cast his most powerful spells until his enemies are dead.

Once per day, Sawara can summon 2-3 double-tailed white foxes. These magical beasts serve best as couriers or scouts, but they can defend their master if need be.

Amaeko Suu

Age: 17

Height: 5’ 3â€Â

Hair color: Black

Eye color: Mud brown

Assassin, level 11

Neutral Evil

STR: 13

DEX: 16

CON: 12

INT: 15

WIS: 10

CHA: 15

History: At the age of seven, Amaeko Suu was taken as payment for a gambling debt accured by her spendthrift, noble parents. She fell into the hands of Hirawaki Souya, Grandmaster of the Black Lizard clan, and given a new nameâ€â€Ã¢â‚¬Å“Amaeko†meaning roughly “sweet girl,†Suu a nonsense syllable. She claims not to remember her parents’ faces, and her earliest actual memories are of being trained as courtesan and assassin for the Black Lizards.

At the age of twelve she was wooed by Amato Sawara, then two years her senior, who lured her with promises of a better life. She quickly realized he was a lunatic who seemed to lack all capacity for human feeling, but was no less in love with him.

Recently, Suu traveled to Amn to help guard a shipment of black-market katanas and wakizashis for their sale to Aran Linvail. Contrary to rumor, the blades of Kara-Tur turned out to posses no inherent magic, and were of no use for the obscure mission Aran had undertaken. Nonetheless while in Amn, Suu heard a rumor that greatly interested her flame Sawara.

Presently, while glad to be at Sawara’s side again, Suu has grown increasingly resentful of his relationship with his bodyguard Hayate. She is most likely too intelligent for the sort of work she does, but for some reason, Sawara continues to trust her. Possibly it is beyond his conception that she would be a threat, even were she to betray him.

Combat: Suu is a student of the tried-and-true method of seducing a man (and in some cases a woman) before killing him. She claims to feel nothing during the act of sex. She has always preferred to go “straight for the throat,†but is a fair hand with a poisoned throwing-dagger.

Hayate Jinzaemon

Age: 24

Height: 6’ 1â€Â

Hair color: Black

Eye color: Mud brown

Kensai, level 15

Lawful Evil

STR: 18/21

DEX: 16

CON: 16

INT: 9

WIS: 10

CHA: 7

History: Hayate is a ronin, a disgraced samurai who earns his living with his blade, and for six years has served as yojimboâ€â€or paid bodyguardâ€â€to the Black Lizard clan. He almost never speaks and has been mistaken for a religious devotee. From what details are known, his fatherâ€â€a low-ranking samuraiâ€â€and his father’s lord were killed in one of Kozakura’s endless power struggles, and he abandoned what seemed like a pointless concept of honor in favor of his current life.

Standing at over six feet, Hayate is freakishly tall for a Kozakuran, and his appearance alone had often resolved matters in his masters’ favor. A testament to his skill with the blade is the lack of visible scars on his face or body.

Hayate has no apparent interest in women. He has sometimes been a companion to his employer, even those who were markedly fond of women, and is now the lover of Amato Sawara. His devotion to Sawara is absolute and machine-like. It is unclear what Sawara himself gets from the relationship, although it may be speculated that he prefers a lover like Hayate, bound to him by money and professional loyalty, to a lover with a mind of his or her own.

Combat: Like all kensai, Hayate’s skill is unencumbered by armor. A well-placed arrow might fell him, but in hand-to-hand combat he is a fearsome opponent. He fights with a rare style using sword and dagger; and both his sword and dagger are artifacts, the best that could be found in the storehouses of the ancient Black Lizard clan.

Hirawaki “Oosouya†Souya

History: Little is known about the now-deceased former Grandmaster of the Black Lizard. He was called “Oosouya,†meaning “Big Souya,†and was considered a temperate and good clan leader.

Kagawa “Chisouya†Souya

History: “Chisouya,†or “little Souya,†is the younger brother of the dead Hirawaki. In contrast to his level-headed big brother, he is known for his vanity, cruelty and his eccentric love of cats. It is well-known that he despises Amato Sawara, and he is not alone among the seasoned captains of the Black Lizard, who both resent the sudden power shift and having to answer to a “mere boy.â€Â

Ginpachi

Age: ;)

Height: ;)

Hair color: White

Eye color: ;)

Rogue, level 10 / Fighter, level 3 / Ninja, level 12

Lawful Neutral

STR: 18

DEX: 18

CON: 15

INT: 16

WIS: 17

CHA: 17

History: Next to nothing is known about the Ninja Master called Ginpachi, a near-mythic figure in Kozakura. He is one of the six Guardians of the Imperial Police, a force ostensibly serving His Holiness the Emperor, but in fact answering to the de facto ruler of Kozakuraâ€â€the shogun or military overlord, currently Omotada Sekine. The Imperial Police are spies, assassins, and saboteurs, and Ginpachi’s life is to fulfill the shogun’s command, whatever it might be. Whether he has desiresâ€â€or indeed an agendaâ€â€of his own is a question for sages.

Ginpachi is fond of disguise and so is rarely seen in his “true†appearance. Even when unmasked, he is surrounded by the aura of his bladeâ€â€Maya Otohime’s Demon-Sealing-Brandâ€â€that renders his features indistinct. The only thing apparent is his terrific age, which has no effect on his abilities as a killer.

He often works closely with his associate Lady Kaede, who prefers more direct methods.

Combat: Ginpachi utilizes any number of arcane (in the sense of ancient) tricks to vanish while in plain view, without resorting to magic. His blade gives him considerable protection against the powers of evil. This does him little good, however, when the shogun’s command pits him against those who are not generally considered evil.

Good thing you now know Hayate's eye color when you're frying him with chain lightning, eh?

And two latecomers.

Oyaji and Sakaki

Ages: 54 (Oyaji) and 16 (Sakaki)

This pair of enigmatic Kara-Turans have set up shop in the Temple District of Athkatla under a special writ from the High Watcher. Their real names are unknown. A branch from the sakaki tree is used in ceremonies dedicated to the eight million gods of Wa and Kozakura, and "Oyaji" is a familiar term for father; but there is no resemblance between the two. Oyaji sells scrolls and other items meant to be effective against the undead. Sakaki, whom he calls his "charge," is a medium with the ability to channel spirits of the recently dead.

Or so he claims. The pair were forced to flee the country of Wa when, unjustly (Oyaji claims), Sakaki was accused of being a fraudulent medium. In fact, the accusation was true. Sakaki's natural gift does not allow her to communicate with the dead, but with the living, by reading their thoughts. Oyaji's motives are nonetheless pure. By having Sakaki tell mourners what they want to hear, he hopes to help gently sever the ties between the dead and the living. His activities are informed by a deep respect for life and its natural limits.

I do believe I can hazard a guess as to where these two come into play. I cannot wait for the next update :)
