Studying the code in effort of creating a similar engine

I wanted to create an engine that does what the IE does and more. Would it be efficient or possible to study the code. If so whats the best way to go about it?

Well, there are many ways.

Reading IESDP is always a very good starting point.

Also, google and download ToBEx, if you want to see some of the inner structures (it is my daily reading besides IESDP).

Running IDA pro against one of the original .exe files is also helpful.

 

If you want to create something GPL based, then the best way is to start with GemRB and basically forget the original engine. You can already create an IE-like game with it, if you are not tied to the original dataset, this engine is already more than capable of running a new game.
