Obsidian's Project Eternity Kickstarter

What do Valve or Blizzard have to do with it? They had to start their online service at one point too and it wasn't free. But Obsidian doesn't need to go that way at all.

And laying people off after a project is cancelled is normal, since they were hired due to the sudden required spike in activity when the deal was made. Normal supply and demand economechanics.

A few tidbits from the recent updates:

  • Project Eternity will be using the Unity engine
  • Mac and Linux versions have been confirmed
  • a DRM-free version of the game will be available via GOG
  • there won't be an alignment system, just reputation with various factions
  • party-based tactical combat will be similar to BG2

Check the Known Information thread at the Obsidian forums for the full scoop.

Great news.

Thank God and whatever for kickstarter. They are making a good game finally, instead of wasting time and talent on pseudo-mainstream crap like DSieges or Alpha Brotocols.

Agreed.

I was really ticked off when I first heard that Obsidian is working on a damn South Park game. Such a waste of Obsidian's creative energy. Hopefully, with Project Eternity, they will once again show us what they're really capable of.

Today, we got a huge update with a lot of new info:

  • 4 core classes - Fighter, Wizard, Priest and Rogue
  • 3 bonus classes already in thanks to stretch goals - Ranger, Monk and Druid
  • 2 additional classes proposed if the $2.5M stretch goal is reached: Barbarian and Cipher
  • Full party creation (custom party members) will be possible at $2.6M
  • Russian and Polish translations are in
  • PayPal support has arrived

Check the update for more detailed info on the 4 core classes.

Another great update today. Apparently, the developers will try their best to make the game easy to mod and translate into different languages:

Mod Support

Our plan is to release our file-format information and expose as much of the data in the game as possible for you to extend and edit. We traditionally do not "hard-code" numbers so that our designers, and you, have the power to easily change and iterate on RPG data. We also plan on releasing localization tools to let communities around the world create localized versions for languages we are not translating Project Eternity into.

Once again showing that they actually care about what their fans want, Obsidian have added Paladins and Bards Chanters at the $2.7M stretch goal. And more importantly, George Ziets will re-join Obsidian at $2.8M!!! Check out Update #18

FYI, George was the Creative Lead on NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer, a game which probably had the best storyline since Planescape Torment. Ok, it's official now, Project Eternity is going to be made by my personal dream team.

FYI, the Project Eternity Kickstarter is now over 3 million dollars. The stronghold is officially in!

The next stretch goal is a second big city (think Baldur's Gate in terms of size) at $3.5M. Hope we reach that too, there are only two more days left before the Kickstarter ends.
