Apparently, this assertion can be caused by invalidly targeted effects. The spell in question is SPIN986.SPL.

Your best bet is probably to examine the spell using NI and see if any of its effects (located under the ability) have a target other than "Preset target (2)". If that does turn out to be the problem, you can attempt to find out which mod is responsible by getting a change-log of the file, but we can deal with that when and if it becomes relevant. You may also be able to correct the problem locally by correcting (changing the target to a valid one) and saving the file with NI.

local fix didn't work for me. heh, strange thing is that the beholder spawned in Temple Sewers was ok, no problems. I dunno, this is kinda beyond my (very) limited IE knowledge. I just reinstalled everything and tested a little bit with only fixpack10 and dungeons be gone installed - berserker speedrunnig to sewers and ctrl+Y everything. No CTD ufff...for now at least. Thanks anyway.

I had this problem too, against the beholder in the Ust Natha arena. I believe this is caused by the Flesh to Stone spell of the beholders, as it's cast right after Cause Serious Wounds.

 

SPIN984.SPL has a 100% magic resistance effect, duration 3 for some reason. It was set to target 0 and changing it to target 2 using NI as Wisp suggested fixed the problem.

 

The magic resistance effect doesn't appear in the base game so I wonder if it's a workaround introduced by one of my mods (SCS?).

As a point of interest, this change is a mangled implementation of the following: creatures turned to stone by beholders are supposed to be immune to magic for three seconds afterwards. I've found in testing that beholders have a habit of chaining Flesh to Stone and Cause Serious Wounds on the same target, If the first works, the second shatters the statue. This is annoying and forces unnecessary reloads. Beholders won't actively target petrified creatures but the CSW is cast before the Flesh to Stone projectile hits. 3 seconds of magic resistance gets around that problem in an unobtrusive way. Unfortunately the actual code was badly bugged (effect was imposed too early, saving throw was omitted, and of course target was misset, so that it causes CTD. Sorry about that. I anticipate v25 fairly soon; pending that, just delete the MR effect entirely (setting the target to 2 will stop crashes but not restore intended behaviour).
